Scalia Cites False Information in Habeas Corpus Dissent

Marjorie Cohn writes for Truthout: "To bolster his argument that the Guantanamo detainees should be denied the right to prove their innocence in federal courts, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in his dissent in Boumediene v. Bush: 'At least 30 of those prisoners hitherto released from Guantanamo have returned to the battlefield.' It turns out that statement is false."

What Boumediene means

CounterPunch
by Joanne Mariner

06/25/08

The Supreme Court ruling in Boumediene v. Bush was a nail in Guantanamo’s coffin. For the third time in four years, the Supreme Court sent a strong message that it disagrees with the Bush Administration’s detainee policies. The Court’s 70-page opinion, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, holds that prisoners in US custody at Guantanamo have the right to challenge their detention via a fair process in federal court. Specifically, the decision says that the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which stripped the detainees of their right of access to the courts, represents an unconstitutional suspension of the writ of habeas corpus. The ruling overturned a lower court decision that found that the 2006 law was constitutional. Like the Court’s previous Guantanamo decisions, the ruling is a victory for individual rights. But viewed as a whole, along with the laws and executive orders that they address, the decisions also provide an interesting case study in the checks and balances, highlighting the complex power relationships among, and decision-making processes of, the three branches of government...

Is war good for the economy?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

Somewhere, George Orwell isn’t smiling. He’d no doubt be appalled, and a little nonplused, by the accuracy of his speculations in Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the novel, you’ll recall, the deliberate impoverishment of the ordinary ‘proles’ and the Outer Party types was a matter of INGSOC policy, a theme underscored by the general shabbiness of Orwell’s dystopia, what with the constant shortages and the way thing always seemed to be literally and physically falling apart. Particularly striking is the Orwellian presentiment that the world of the future is bound to be poorer and, simultaneously, engaged in constant warfare. This prediction seemed, for quite a while, to be one of the few he got wrong. Yet Orwell, it turns out, was right; it’s just that the productive power of capitalism in the U.S. was so great that it coasted along for a long time on sheer momentum...

New York Times editors say: "Electronic voting is notoriously vulnerable to technical glitches and vote theft. By now, most states have passed good laws requiring paper records of every vote cast - an important safeguard. But that is not enough. Then there's a select group that are masters of the universe in the ever-expanding military-corporate complex, regularly scoring more than a billion tax dollars a year from the Department of Defense. Unlike Lockheed, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman, however, most of these billion-dollar babies manage to fly beneath the radar of media (not to mention public) attention. If appearing at all, they generally do so innocuously in the business pages of newspapers. When it comes to their support for the Pentagon's wars and occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq, they are, in media terms, missing in action."

Elektronischer Einkommensnachweis ELENA nimmt Formen an
