Can social capital redeem our financial souls? At a time when financial markets have clearly let us down, we can’t afford to breathe new life into a carcass. Social capital offers the solution we have been looking for. What is social capital? It refers to the worth of our social networks, individual skills, and even things like the time we invest in volunteering. For example, the time I put into helping a neighbor paint a fence (free of charge) is a form of social capital. Its value equates to the time I spent and the ‘worth’ of an enhanced relationship. In traditional economics, the nonfinancial contributions we make are basically worthless. Financial transactions and our monetary net worth are all that really matter. Sadly, we have sunk to measuring our individual and national value through debt, surpluses and productivity gains. But what if we looked beyond investments and financial capital and began taking social capital seriously?

This Nixon-to-China meme is regularly invoked as aphoristic evidence that we must expect the unexpected, and it comes to mind when considering the prospects of an impending military conflict with Iran: it occurs to me that only Barack Obama, who won the White House in large part due to his opposition to the Iraq war, could take us to war with Iran, and rally liberals and much of the left behind it. Oh, I can hear the outraged howls of protest from the Obama cult, but consider: The president has already set a September deadline for Iran to respond to our as-yet-informal proposal to negotiate over the completely phony nuclear issue — an oddly confrontational approach to opening the first on-the-record high level talks with the Islamic Republic since the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979...

A JUMBO jet changed direction because of interference from a passenger's mobile phone, air safety officials have told The Scotsman.

The revelation came as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) attempted to avert a surge of air rage incidents involving mobiles by warning holidaymakers that most airlines do not yet permit their use in flight.
