The report says that combined, these three firms earned $9.6 billion, paid bonuses of nearly $18 billion, and received TARP taxpayer funds worth $45 billion. Why did this happen? Because, according to Cuomo, when times were good the bankers rewarded themselves based on performance. When the economy started to sour - they decoupled the bonus structure from reality and kept rewarding themselves.

The House of Commons Foreign Affairs committee is complaining that the joint U.S.-NATO mission in Afghanistan is degenerating into a strategic disaster — or, as they put it, has become ‘considerably more difficult than might otherwise have been the case’ — and it’s all our fault. That may very well be true, but one has to ask: faced with an essentially impossible task like subduing the Afghans, under what circumstances would the effort have been any less difficult? A Timaru man unhappy about a cellphone tower being installed near his home is taking the Timaru District Council to the Environment Court.

At a hearing in August, Bruce Spiers will ask the court to rule that the district council incorrectly interpreted its own district plan when it allowed a cellphone tower to be installed in a residential area.

A 10-metre pole and equipment cabinet was installed on the grass median of Craigie Avenue early last year without public consultation.

Mr Spiers can see the tower from his kitchen window. He approached the council at the time it was installed but with no success.

He is now asking the Environment Court for a declaration relating to cellphone sites in all of the Timaru District's residential zones.
