In Deutschland leben über 18 Prozent der Bevölkerung in Armut. Durch Hartz IV und die anderen Grundsicherungen werden Menschen tagtäglich aus dem gesellschaftlichen Leben ausgegrenzt. Die Armutsrisikoschwelle, nach der derzeit seriösesten Datenquelle, dem Sozio-ökonomischen Panel des Deutschen Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung, lag im Jahr 2006 bei 891 Euro für Alleinstehende. Der durchschnittliche Hartz-IV-Satz liegt bei 649 Euro mit Kosten der Unterkunft und Heizung (KdU). Diese Armutssätze können bei einem "Fehlverhalten" des Leistungsbeziehenden sogar bis zur 100 Prozent durch Sanktionen gekürzt werden. Das Recht auf Existenz und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe muss auch in Deutschland als Grundrecht geachtet werden. Armut und Ausgrenzung gehören abgeschafft. DIE LINKE fordert eine Anhebung der Regelleistung bei Hartz IV und anderen Grundsicherungen auf 500 Euro und verbesserte Leistungen für die Wohnkosten. Ebenso tritt DIE LINKE für die Abschaffung aller Sanktionen bei Hartz IV ein und unterstützt die Petition zur ersatzlosen Streichung des Sanktionsparagrafen 31 unter https://www.sanktionen-weg.de.
