The Foreign Policy of Optimism

Rubrick Biegon, Foreign Policy in Focus: "Times are trying for American exceptionalism, that peculiar notion that the United States is unique in its attributes and qualitatively different from the rest of the international community. For many Americans, the Great Recession, set against the military quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan, has clouded their view of the United States as a beacon of progress and anchor of stability in a turbulent world."

Are US wars fueling domestic terrorism?

The Nation Blog
by Katrina vanden Heuvel

12/27/09

Are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan creating a domestic terrorist threat? The potential disaster of a Nigerian man attempting to blow up a US airliner on Christmas day forces us to confront the question. … What is needed now are not partisan fights about whether the Obama Administration was doing enough to guard against terrorist attacks in the wake of shootings last month at Fort Hood, Texas. Instead, we should question whether our overreaction to the crimes against humanity on 9/11 — including the creation of an endless ‘war’ against terrorism — has done more to undermine our security than enhance it...

Who’s to blame for the massive deficit?

Cato Institute
by Daniel J. Mitchell

12/29/09

Some Republicans … complain that Obama tripled the budget deficit in his first year. This assertion is understandable, since the deficit jumped from about $450 billion in 2008 to $1.4 trillion in 2009. As this chart illustrates, with the Bush years in green, it appears as if Obama’s policies have led to an explosion of debt. But there is one rather important detail that makes a big difference. The chart is based on the assumption that the current administration should be blamed for the 2009 fiscal year...

Fiscal irresponsibility

Intellectual Conservative
by Steven D. Laib

12/27/09

Years ago when I lived in California my office had a significant consumer bankruptcy practice. Along the way I did a lot of client counseling and learned a significant amount about how people got themselves into financial problems. Generally it started with spending well beyond their means in order to impress others. Then things started to go wrong and they weren’t able to make the monthly payments. They started borrowing from other people, or transferring balances between credit cards, and eventually had no recourse other than to call it quits and start over again. The United States of America is heading down the same path. Meanwhile, despite government claims to the contrary the economy continues to fail and tax revenues decline with it. This makes the situation worse, and the only medicine Washington is willing to prescribe is more taxes and more government spending. It seems that they are intent on killing, rather than healing the patient...

America’s decade of decline

According to the International Monetary Fund, the United States began the century producing 32 percent of the world’s gross domestic product. We ended the decade producing 24 percent. No nation in modern history, save for the late Soviet Union, has seen so precipitous a decline in relative power in a single decade. The United States began the century with a budget surplus. We ended with a deficit of 10 percent of gross domestic product, which will be repeated in 2010. Where the economy was at full employment in 2000, 10 percent of the labor force is out of work today and another 7 percent is underemployed or has given up looking for a job...

The Obama administration coerced the Supreme Court to make the following ruling: anyone the president declares to be an ‘enemy combatant’ who is detained by the USA military government is not a person. The criminalization of protest

Reason
by Radley Balko

I’ve lived in the Washington, D.C., area for the better part of the last 10 years. So I’ve seen my share of demonstrations, although more often than not I just try to avoid the traffic nightmares they cause. Among the various classes of protests — pro-life, anti-war, environmental, and now tea parties — the most destructive are the anti-globalization marches. So when cops clashed with anti-globalization demonstrators at the Pittsburgh G-20 summit in September, it was easy to assume that most of the altercations represented justified police responses to overzealous protesters. But a number of disturbing photographs, videos, and witness accounts told a different story. Along with similar evidence from other recent high-stakes political events, they reveal an increasing, disquieting willingness to smother even peaceful dissent... (for publication 01/10)

Fünf Jahre Hartz IV sind fünf Jahre Armut und Ausgrenzung per Gesetz

29. Dezember 2009

The new American capitalism

FreedomWorks
by Matthew Clemente

12/28/09

In 2008 and 2009, the Bush White House, the Obama White House and the Federal Reserve doled out over $2 trillion in taxpayer money in an effort to save failed businesses and to stimulate the economy. In 2010 — the Wall Street Journal predicts — the public will begin to understand how dramatically such efforts have changed the US economy. ‘Only as the recession recedes will it become fully evident how permanently the state’s role has expanded and whether, as a consequence, a new, hybrid strain of American capitalism is emerging.’ This ‘hybrid strain’ of capitalism is nothing more than the overreaching hand of government intruding into the private sector...

Hope is not change

In These Times
by David Sirota

12/28/09

When you look honestly at what’s going on in our government right now, it’s not clear that ‘change’ was anything more than a cynical campaign slogan on a colorful t-shirt. People are right to be angry. While we have certainly seen some encouraging progressive policy successes, the average person is nonetheless looking at an economy with a real unemployment rate of 17 percent — the highest since the Great Depression. And if they hear news of politicians at all, they either see them taking 15 different positions on the most simple issues, or raising boatloads of cash from the same corporate fat cats who got the country into this mess. We must realize that politics is serious, and at this time it behooves us to change our attitude and adjust our perspective...

The year Iraq was lost for good

AntiWar.Com
by Kelley B. Vlahos

12/29/09

It’s been a long while since anyone has even debated whether ‘victory’ was applicable to the U.S.-led invasion and subsequent seven-year occupation of Iraq. But 2009 was the year that the war’s sad fate in the history books was assured, no doubt leaving hundreds of thousands of American servicemen and women to feel as though their sacrifice, and that of their comrades, has been largely unfulfilled by anything remotely resembling ‘one of the great achievements of mankind.’ No, in addition to what the Washington Post called ‘one of the most unpopular wars in American history,’ Iraq was all but officially declared a ‘non-victory’ in the waning days of 2008 by none other than Gen. David Petraeus, now head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), who could hardly be accused of bias against the American cause in Iraq and the Long War...

We Want Our Flag Back

Stephen Rohde, LA Daily Journal: "'If you had told me ten years ago that our government would be deliberately holding people in captivity on a naval base outside the US mainland so that we could do whatever we wanted to them without the intervention of US courts, I would have told you that you had been watching too many miniseries on TV.' These outraged words from Julia Tarver Mason, a partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City, are typical of the over 100 personal narratives written by lawyers, translators and others who have represented and assisted the detainees at the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which have been collected in the new book 'THE GUANTANAMO LAWYERS: Inside a Prison Outside the Law.'"

Hoping for a New Ethic in 2010

Jim Hightower, Truthout: "This special season got me to thinking about America's spirit of giving, and I don't mean this overdone business of Christmas gifts. I mean our true spirit of giving - giving of ourselves. Yes, we are a country of rugged individualists, yet there's also a deep, community-minded streak in each of us."

CBS News

12/31/09

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling supported the findings of a lower court judge in Manhattan who also rejected the attempt to uncloak the warrantless electronic surveillance system’s targets. The National Security Agency and the Department of Justice had refused to comply with a 2006 Freedom of Information Act request by the lawsuit’s plaintiffs...

Lining Up for the Wall Street Gravy Train

By Mike Whitney

The banks are not only taking depositors money and using it in high-risk derivatives transactions and currency "carry trades", they're also propping up the long daisy-chain of insolvent creditors whose default could domino Lehman-like through the entire financial system. Funny how the media skips little tidbits like this when they give their rosy evening roundup.
