The moose is a Canadian wilderness icon... but on mainland Nova Scotia, if we don't act now, it's a species that will only live in history books. No more than 1,000 moose are left on the mainland, surviving in the most remote areas. Today, factors such as continued logging road construction and clear-cutting are endangering the recovery, and the very survival, of Nova Scotia's mainland moose population.

The provincial government is developing a Recovery Plan for Nova Scotia’s endangered mainland moose, and CPAWS is working to ensure that the plan will address habitat loss and fragmentation. CPAWS is asking the Nova Scotia government to protect "core habitat" for moose, and to strengthen special forestry guidelines. If we can protect and restore enough habitat, other major threats to moose recovery, such as disease and poaching, can be alleviated.
