Army Sends Infant to Protective Services, Mom to Afghanistan

By Dahr Jamail

U.S. Army Specialist Alexis Hutchinson, a single mother, is being threatened with a military court-martial if she does not agree to deploy to Afghanistan, despite having been told she would be granted extra time to find someone to care for her 11-month-old son while she is overseas.

Her son needs her at home. The Empire demands her services in its war on Afghanistan. Since nobody is able to provide the child with a suitable home while she’s away, the mother quite sensibly decided that her first duty was to her child. So Alexis Hutchinson of Oakland, California, an Army Specialist — and, what’s infinitely more important, a single mother to her11-month-old son, Kamani — may wind up in prison. Her son, who was kidnapped and briefly detained by Child ‘Protective’ Services — may wind up in foster care...

The U.S. military consumes 22 gallons of fuel per soldier, per day. And each gallon costs $45 or more to haul to the battlefield. Actually, $45 per gallon is a lowball estimate; according to the Navy, it's more like $300 to $400.

Afghanistan's Sham Army

By Chris Hedges

American military advisers who work with the Afghan National Army, or ANA, speak of poorly trained and unmotivated Afghan soldiers who have little stomach for military discipline and even less for fighting. They describe many ANA units as being filled with brigands who terrorize local populations, exacting payments and engaging in intimidation, rape and theft.

Dahr Jamail and Sarah Lazare, TomDispatch.com: "Hidden behind the gates of military bases across the U.S., troops facing AWOL and desertion charges regularly find themselves in the hands of a military that metes out informal, open-ended punishments by forcing them to wait months -- sometimes more than a year -- to face military justice. In the meantime, some of these soldiers are offered a free pass out of this legal limbo as long as they agree to deploy to Afghanistan or Iraq -- even if they have been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)."

Afghanistan government says foreign officials are interfering

The Afghan Foreign Ministry says a U.N. envoy’s demands ‘violated respect for Afghanistan’s national sovereignty.’ A NATO airstrike that killed Afghan soldiers and police threatens to worsen tensions. Obama Leaning Toward 34,000 More Troops for Afghanistan

Jonathan S. Landay, John Walcott and Nancy A. Ellen Goodman, Truthout: "After 9/11, when we went after al-Qaeda and the Taliban who had hosted these terrorists, many saw collateral virtue in the liberation of Afghan women. Indeed, President Bush played this moral card in his 2002 State of the Union speech when he declared to thunderous applause: 'Today women are free, and are part of Afghanistan's new government.' Mission accomplished. Many women shed their burqas, opened schools, entered parliament. Equal rights were written into the constitution. But slowly, as America turned to the disastrous misadventure in Iraq, Afghan women's freedoms were casually traded in like chits for power."

The Pentagon's Building Boom in Afghanistan Indicates a Long War Ahead

2014 or Bust

Nick Turse, TomDispatch.com: "In recent weeks, President Obama has been contemplating the future of US military operations in Afghanistan. He has also been touting the effects of his policies at home, reporting that this year's Recovery Act not only saved jobs, but also was 'the largest investment in infrastructure since [President Dwight] Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System in the 1950's.' At the same time, another much less publicized US-taxpayer-funded infrastructure boom has been underway. This one in Afghanistan. While Washington has put modest funding into civilian projects in Afghanistan this year - ranging from small-scale power plants to 'public latrines' to a meat market - the real construction boom is military in nature. The Pentagon has been funneling stimulus-sized sums of money to defense contractors to markedly boost its military infrastructure in that country."
