Pesticide residues found in nearly a third of Britain's food and drink

By Louise Barnett
Published: 27 September 2006

https://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article1761673.ece

Nearly a third of food and drink products tested by a government watchdog body last year contained traces of pesticides, and in 1.7 per cent of cases the chemical residues exceeded maximum legal limits.

A further 30.2 per cent of the 3,787 items surveyed had pesticide traces within those limits, the Pesticide Residue Committee said yesterday in its annual report. In 2004, only 1.09 per cent of the samples contained pesticide traces above the statutory limits.

The increase was due to more imported exotic fruit and vegetables being tested, the committee said.

Levels of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables destined for schools as part of the "five-a-day" scheme were broadly similar to those in the general food supply chain, the report said.

Of the 166 samples tested which were destined for schoolchildren, 132 contained chemical traces at or below the maximum permitted levels. Another three of the samples had residues which were above the legal limits.

Items tested in the overall survey included fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, cereal products, tea, olive oil, fruit juice and infant foods. No residues were found in chicken, eggs, infant formula, kidneys, milk or swede.

The samples of imported and home-produced food were collected from UK shops, markets, ports and wholesale suppliers.

Yesterday's report summarises the findings of 39 surveys carried out in
2005 as part of the committee's monitoring programme.

Ian Brown, the committee's chairman, said most of the pesticide residues were not a cause for health concern among consumers. "I cannot overemphasise the importance of continuing to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day," he said.

"The health benefits far outweigh any concern about pesticide residues."

The Pesticide Residues Committee advises ministers, the Food Standards Agency and the Pesticides Safety Directorate.

The committee has an annual budget of around £2.2m and carries out a continuing programme of food and drink monitoring. The committee publishes its findings every three months and summarises them in annual reports.

Danger lurking within: Canadians shocked by results of blood tests

The more toxins that enter a human body, the more that his or her cells will utilize nutrients necessary for detoxification. If suboptimal nutrition becomes transiently or permanently chronic, toxin-induced adverse effects are likely. Illnesses including but not limited to diarrhea can exacerbate nutrient depletion, thereby increasing likelihood of toxin-induced injury. Since numerous intra-body toxins are now a ubiquitous reality, the deliberate injecting of toxins is all the more risky.

In the last 50 years, science has invented thousands of chemicals to do everything from withstanding fire and resisting stains to keeping your breakfast eggs from sticking to the pan. But what makes your life easier may end up making your life shorter --- made to be indestructible, these chemicals are showing up in alarming numbers in our bodies, and wreaking havoc on key biological systems. In a special series over the next few Sundays, Sun Media investigates Canada's toxic conundrum./

For some, ignorance is bliss. But not for a small group of Canadians, who swallowed their fears and had their blood tested to find out just how many environmental toxins are flowing through their veins.

The study, conducted on behalf of the national environmental group Environmental Defence, looked for specific chemicals in 11 adults across the country last year, and more recently, tested parents and children in five Canadian families.

Amy Robertson and her kids, Johanna, 15 and Satchel, 13, rolled up their sleeves for the test, hoping their healthy lifestyle had spared them a few of the pollutants --- the kids grew up on an organic farm in B.C.'s Fraser Valley before settling in Vancouver last year.

But they would have no such luck. Thirty-one pollutants out of 68 were detected in Amy's blood. Her 15-year-old daughter Johanna showed 32 in her sample, and her son, Satchel, 13, was polluted with 29 out of the 68 --- the second-highest level detected in a child in the study.

"I was pretty shocked. We sat down and had a weeping session after the results came in, but we need to speak out on this issue because it's only getting worse," Amy told Sun Media.

Of particular concern: although the industrial chemicals known as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were banned in Canada nearly 15 years before Johanna and Satchel were born, both Robertson kids had PCB levels higher than their mom, and were contaminated with PCBs that weren't present in Amy at all.

"What we found is that most people had most of the pollutants we tested for and in most cases, the kids had higher levels than their parents, which is surprising and incredibly worrisome," says Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence.

"These chemicals are things that are in products in our kitchen, our upholstery, new cars ... The reality is that it's a much more insidious, invisible problem."

Environmental Defence is also testing blood from Liberal environment critic John Godfrey, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, Health Minster Tony Clement and NDP leader Jack Layton. Results will be posted at https:// www.toxicnation.ca

WHO Endorses Indoor Spraying With DDT

Controversial pesticide is safe and effective against malaria, world health body says

Bette Hileman
https://pubs.acs.org/cen/news/84/i39/8439WHO.html

On Sept. 15, the World Health Organization strongly endorsed the indoor spraying of DDT to control malaria-carrying mosquitoes in developing countries. At a press conference, WHO spokesmen repeatedly called the pesticide "safe."

LINE OF DEFENSE -Cyhalothrin insecticide is being sprayed on the walls of a house in Angola to prevent malaria.

The U.S. and other industrialized countries banned outdoor spraying of DDT in the early 1970s because of its environmental toxicity, and for many years WHO did not promote its use for malaria control. But after DDT use was restricted, malaria resurged, and the disease now kills more than 1 million people per year, mostly children in Africa.

A number of malaria-plagued African countries—Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—had already been using DDT for interior residual spraying to prevent malaria. But seven others, including Uganda, where malaria is endemic, have refused to use it.

Arata Kochi, who leads WHO’s global malaria program, said at the press conference: "One of the best tools we have against malaria is indoor residual house spraying. Of the dozen insecticides WHO has approved as safe for house spraying, the most effective is DDT." The small amounts of DDT used for indoor spraying are not dangerous, he claimed.

WHO's announcement is highly controversial, however. Some environmental organizations, such as Environmental Defense, which campaigned to phase out DDT in the 1960s and 1970s, now support its use for interior spraying. Other groups, such as Beyond Pesticides, say dependence on DDT will cause greater long-term problems than would other methods of malaria control. It believes "it is possible to effectively fight malaria without poisoning future generations of children in malaria hot spots."

Indeed, WHO's announcement comes at a time of increasing reports of potential human health threats from DDT. For example, at the recent American Chemical Society national meeting in San Francisco, researchers presented evidence that past exposure to the pesticides DDT or dieldrin may speed up the development of Parkinson's disease. There is also evidence that infants exposed to DDT in the womb may experience slow or stunted mental or physical growth (C&EN, July 24, page 30).
