First, the underlying cause of any shortage is the lack of a free market, since genuine shortages cannot appear in a free market. Instead, while prices of goods would likely rise at the onset of reduced supplies, the goods in question would always be available at some price — and the higher the price, the more the supply would increase to meet demand, which would then of course reduce the price. If we had free world markets, food would be exported from some countries, such as the United States and Europe, where food is plentiful, to countries where it is needed.

Annen kritisiert Reisepläne Merkels für Lateinamerika

Der SPD-Außenpolitiker Niels Annen hat die Lateinamerika-Reisepläne von Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) kritisiert. "Die Kanzlerin sollte die neue politische Realität Lateinamerikas zur Kenntnis nehmen, die aus der Ablehnung von entfesselten kapitalistischen Märkten und dem Scheitern des neoliberalen Projektes entstanden ist", sagte der SPD-Politiker dem "Tagesspiegel". Er bemängelte, dass Merkel nach dem EU-Lateinamerika-Gipfel in Peru neben den zwei einzigen noch konservativ regierten Länder des Kontinents, Kolumbien und Mexiko, nur Brasilien besuchen wolle. Die Kanzlerin reist Mitte Mai erstmals in ihrer Amtszeit nach Lateinamerika.

„Die Demonstrationen begannen am Donnerstag, den 3. April in Le Cayes. Sie richteten sich gegen die steigenden Lebensmittelpreise und breiteten sich über Haiti aus - bis nach Petit-Goagve, Gonaives und Aquin. Am 7. April erreichten sie auch die Hauptstadt Port-au-Prince. Seit vielen Monaten war es zu einem Anstieg der Preise für Grundnahrungsmittel gekommen. Für die Armen war Nahrung zunehmend unerschwinglich geworden. Auf den Straßen wurden Reifen in Brand gesteckt und zu Barrikaden geschichtet. Milizen der islamischen Räte, Soldaten der US-gestützten äthiopischen Armee - und schiesswütige Polizei: Menschen, die in Somalia einfach nur leben wollen, stehen unter drei Feuern. Am vergangenen Montag hatte die Polizei das Feuer auf ungefähr 20.000 Menschen in Mogadischu eröffnet, die trotz der Kriegssituation (erst am Tag zuvor hatten rund 1.000 Menschen eines Stadtteils gegen einen US-Raketenangriff protestiert, dem neben einem "Terroristenführer" weitere 10 Anwohner zum opfer gefallen waren) gegen die rasante Teuerung protestiert hatten und gegen die - somalische aktuelle Spezialität - zunehmende Praxis der Händler, nur noch US-Dollars anzunehmen. The price of wheat has gone up by 130% over the last year. Rice has doubled in price in Asia in the first three months of 2008 alone, and just last week it hit record highs on the Chicago futures market ... In fear of political turmoil, world leaders have been calling for more food aid, as well as for more funds and technology to boost agricultural production. Cereal exporting countries, meanwhile, are closing their borders to protect their domestic markets, while other countries have been forced into panic buying. Is this a price blip? No. A food shortage? Not that either. We are in a structural meltdown, the direct result of three decades of neoliberal globalisation."
