Fewer than one in five Iraqis has confidence in U.S.-led coalition troops and they are evenly split on whether they have confidence in Iraq's government, according to a poll published Monday.

A recent cover story in the Time magazine (March, 2007, Europe and Asia) by Bobby Ghosh, "Why They Hate Each Other", aimed at removing the Occupation as the generator of violence against the Iraqi people, and portrays the violence as "Iraqis killing Iraqis". This media distortion obfuscates the U.S. monopoly on terrorism and allows the U.S. to use Iraq as a laboratory for terror at the expense of the Iraqi people.

Was it only four years ago that we sat and watched TV images of American tanks hurtling across Iraqi desert sands? The prevailing mood in this country, then, was a mixture of gung ho and unsure. This, many thought, was going to be the mother of all reality shows — 21st-century warfare in real time, the world’s mightiest military, fly-swatting a bratty country. That was then, and here we are now, in the war’s fifth year — past statue-toppling and museum-looting; past ‘Mission Accomplished,’ ‘Stuff happens’ and ‘Bring it on!’; past purple fingers, elections and constitutions; past car bombs, IEDs, beheadings and torturing; past talks of partition and is-it-or-isn’t-it-civil-war debates...

What a dispirited, dispiriting speech President George W. Bush delivered this morning to mark the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. One could argue that it would have been dishonest to deliver any other sort of speech, for few things are more dispiriting than this war, which has now gone on for a quarter-year longer than America’s involvement in World War II. Yes, the war in Iraq is a very different war, but one would have thought — certainly we were told — it would be a lot shorter.
