Am 24.06.2006 schrieb Rainer Rupp in der jungen Welt unter der Überschrift „Marschbefehl verweigert“: „Der 28 Jahre alte Leutnant der US-Armee, Ehren Watada, verweigerte am Donnerstag seinen Marschbefehl in den Irak mit der Begründung, erstens, daß er als Soldat verpflichtet sei, Recht und Gesetz und die Verfassung der USA zu achten, zweitens, weil er in Irak dazu gezwungen würde, Kriegsverbrechen zu begehen, und drittens, weil der Irak-Krieg ein ungerechter und illegaler sei. Damit ist der aus Hawaii stammende Watada der erste Offizier der US-Armee, der den Einsatz in Irak wegen der Illegalität des Krieges offen ablehnt und so das mächtige Pentagon öffentlichkeitswirksam herausfordert. Watada wurde umgehend in Fort Lewis im Bundesstaat Washington weggesperrt. Ihm droht ein Prozeß vor einem militärischen Standgericht.
