The proposed ban on incandescent bulbs is a disaster

The proposed ban on incandescent bulbs is a disaster, not only for ES suffers but also for people with light sensitivity arising from a number of other health conditions including lupus, ME, porphyria, XP, types of eczema etc.

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for the South East Region, is the prime mover pushing for a total ban on incandescent bulbs at EU level. However, we've been lobbying her and we think she might be about to accept there must be exemptions.

This would be a major step forward.

If you live in South East - she is one of your 10 MEPs under the PR system.

Please write to her at:

Caroline Lucas MEP - UK Office Suite 58, The Hop Exchange
24 Southwark Street London SE1 1TY UK
Tel: ++44 (0)20 7407 6281

Fax: ++32 (0)2 2849153
Email: clucas@europarl.eu.int

As one of her constituents you may even have voted for her - if so tell her, and how disappointed you are.

Tell her that a ban will inflict pain, suffering and total social exclusion on sick and disabled people.

I attach SPECTRUM's letter and a briefing to the UK's All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin, which also mentions a new highly efficient incandescent bulb under development by GE and due to be marketed from 2010.

If you don't live in the South East, you can still write to Caroline Lucas to protest at her stance on incandescent bulbs.

You can also easily e-mail all other MEPs through this site: https://www.writetothem.com

And, also if you are still feeling feisty, try some EU Commissioners for Employment, Health and Consumer Protection.

EDM 1316 - Phasing out the sale of incandescent lightbulbs

Great news!

Thanks to Bruce George MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Skin, and the Group's assistant Katherine Clifford, we now have the following EDM:

EDM no. 1316

PHASING OUT THE SALE OF INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS

Mr Bruce George

That this House notes that the Government's proposals to phase out the sale of incandescent light bulbs by 2011 is likely to have serious consequences for the health and quality of life of people with light sensitivity conditions unless exemptions are made; recognises that people with such conditions can suffer severe and debilitating reactions to non-incandescent lighting; further notes that a ban on incandescent light bulbs would prevent people with light sensitivity conditions from using electrical lighting in their own homes, and would restrict their movements to places where electrical lighting is not in use, thus leading to social exclusion; and calls on the Government to ensure that suitable incandescent bulbs remain available for purchase and use by or for people with light sensitivity conditions.

This EDM remains open until 26th July. We now have to lobby MPs to get as many of them to sign it as possible, if only a few sign it, the Government will not take it seriously and the hard work getting it will be lost.

So please write to your MP explaining about the lightbulb issue and asking them to sign EDM 1316.

Please feature this request on websites and newsletters, alongside the e-petition: https://petitions.pm.gov.uk/righttolight/

(NB: MPs who are also Government Ministers cannot sign EDMs)

Thankyou very much.

Kind regards

Ruth

Dearest David and Chris,

Yes we are still fighting Tetra next to The Wheelabout!

We are in the process of having a QC review (for free) the decision on aspects of new Disability Law. We are begging The Disability Rights Commission to back us. We are getting legal aid applications processed for two of the children who stay at the Wheelabout. We are trying desperately for any last minute publicity we can get. Meanwhile we are still waiting to see if The Robert Lock Trust(landowner) will honour their promise to serve an injunction.

Airwave/Arqiva have behaved disgracefully on this as have Pembrokeshire County Council and deserve to be exposed.

We have to submit papers for a Judicial review by 23rd April. Less than 3 weeks !

Any publicity you could help with would be gratefully accepted.

Very Happy Easter

Sincerely

Ann

Mystery headaches reboot wi-fi fears

By Jonathan Milne

An unpublished report is raising fresh concerns about the possible health effects of wireless computer networks in schools, saying they could cause headaches, The report by Becta, the educational technology agency, has emerged as the Health Protection Agency called for the Government to consider investigating how safe wi-fi is to pupils and teachers. The TES has obtained an extract from the Becta study, which was carried out seven years ago when wireless systems were first being installed in schools, but it was never published. The report said the radiation produced by any device involving wireless technology raised health and safety questions. "During the testing carried out by Becta, which involved using at least six sets of equipment simultaneously, some engineers complained of head- aches at the end of the working day," it said. "But whether this is due to exposure to radio waves or some other factor is unclear." The discovery of the report comes as campaigns grow against the use of wi-fi networks in schools. Several have discontinued their use after staff complained of adverse health effects. Philip Parkin, the general secretary of the Professional Association of Teachers, has called for a full investigation into the networks. "We continue to be concerned about the possible effects of wi-fi, particularly on children whose brains and bodies are still developing," he said. But government scientists have said there is no credible research to back up health fears about such-networks, although no research has proved them to be safe either. A Becta spokesman said it had not carried out any further investigation on the engineers'' headaches and that it deferred to the Health Protection Agency on health and safety issues. Dr Michael Clark, the HPA's science spokesman, said: "A problem with very common symptoms such as headaches is that they can be caused by many things." Recent studies had confirmed that typical exposures to radio waves from wireless networks were extremely low, Dr Clark said. "The levels are also lower than those from mobile phones, FM radio, television and the numerous other radio signals in the classroom." But he said manufacturers and the Department for Education and Skills should consider commissioning an independent study of wi-fi signals in schools. Mary Barker, the general secretary of the ICT teachers' association Naace, said wi-fi was a "wonderful facility" that allowed for more flexible lessons, but that research was needed so teachers could be confident about its safety.

Martin,

BBC's New Media Home Family

Dear Dean and Suzanne Boston,

Firstly, I must apologise for contacting you via your school and/or work e-mails, I do not wish to impose upon your private lives, but I felt that there are a couple of things that you should know.

I saw the article on the BBC website about you being the "New Media Home Family" [ https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6540993.stm ] and thought that I might contact you to tell you about some of the downsides of certain technologies, especially so called "wireless" ones. Devices such as the Belkin Wireless router, Acer Aspire iDea 500 media center PC, Apple MacBook, Sonos wireless music system and Kodak wireless digital photo frame make use of wireless networking "wi-fi" which itself uses microwave transmissions typically at 2.4 GHz - (the same frequency band as used by most microwave ovens).

These devices work in a similar fashion to Mobile Telephone Masts, also using microwave technology. The risks due to being exposed to microwave radiation are well documented if you look at non-Industry and non-Government (both being, it must be noted, financially biased towards the microwave technology industry to the tune of billions of pounds). I have helped to collate the research evidence from Independent Scientists, and have helped to write a summary detailing them for the average person, so that as many as possible can be informed of the dangers from them to our health. Symptoms of microwave radiation are many, some are detailed below and, over time, do lead to various cancers and other terrible illnesses. This, of course, is not publicised by those with interests in the technology.

Now that you have had a little while with the wireless devices inside your house you may well be starting to notice some of the more common downsides - i.e. headaches, migraines, irritability, inability to sleep, possibly nose bleeds or ringing in the ears. It is thought that 4% of the general population are "Electrosensitive" and that 1/4 of people are slightly effected by the proximity of wireless devices - it may be that you and your family are not in these categories - but since the exposure tends to have an accumulated effect you may well have some of the symptoms mentioned later on (and/or worse).

I should explain that I don't tend to subscribe to conspiracy theories and that I have been working in a technical career for the last 18 years. I have only latterly become interested in the subject of wi-fi, other "wireless" devices and mobile phone masts and their emissions through the introduction of the latter into my neighbourhood in the last couple of years.

There has been more of a debate on wi-fi in recent months especially in the context of schools. You, Suzanne, as a Primary School teacher, may be interested to know that 2 weeks ago journalist Jonathan Miles from the Times Educational Supplement (TES) published an article entitled "Mystery headaches reboot wi-fi fears". In it he discovered that Becta had discovered that engineers installing wireless networks in schools had complained about headaches from the networks, yet the report was never published.

LLRC success in mast challenge

(excerpt)

Mobile phone mast scuppered by £200 Citizen Epidemiology survey

Local Council votes Orange out three times; Orange not to appeal.

Orange has withdrawn its application to install a mobile phone transmitter in the tower of St. Michael's church in Aberystwyth, Wales, UK. This unexpected development comes immediately after Green Audit (LLRC's scientific advisers) began a local health survey.

LLRC funds health questionnaire

Dr. Chris Busby of Green Audit said "We set out to discover the baseline of health before the microwave transmissions could begin. We intended to do a follow-up survey after the mast went into operation."

The Low Level Radiation Campaign felt that this was an opportunity for sound epidemiology. Since the study population would be identical to the control, the only difference would be the microwave exposure. This approach would provide reliable data on the effects.

Funded by LLRC, Green Audit designed a questionnaire and distributed it to a sample of houses in the area. We have used this method to monitor the effects of radioactive contamination in other parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In Aberystwyth the initial survey was to be followed up a few weeks after the mast began transmitting at full power. Green Audit also planned to measure local field intensities.

Background

Local opposition to the transmitter was strong because St. Michael's church, where it was to be sited, is in a residential area and close to Castle Park, a popular children's playground and tourist attraction. There is evidence that living near such transmission antennae causes a range of health effects, from leukaemia and lymphoma to neurological symptoms like sleep disturbances, headaches, and depression. A paper outlining the scientific issues was sent to the local council (Ceredigion District Council) in September last year. The Council rejected the application three times.

Surprise rejection

The last rejection was a surprise development because it was expected that the applicants (Orange and the Rector of St. Michael's, Reverend Stuart Bell whose church was in line to receive annual payments of £5000) would thereafter appeal to the Welsh Assembly Government in Cardiff. The Health Protection Agency would have advised that there was no measurable health threat, Orange would have won the appeal, and costs in the region of £30,000 – 35,000 would have been awarded against Ceredigion District Council. But it looks as if Councillors had the courage to stand up to these bullying tactics.

Surprise retreat

Immediately following the commencement of the health survey, the Council has written to Green Audit to say that Orange and the Rector are not appealing; they have withdrawn the application.

Precedent

This could be a useful precedent. LLRC does not usually address non-ionising radiation but this looks like a case where just a whiff of good epidemiology, independent of industry funding and reviewers' bias and backed up by the implicit threat that (as usual) we would go straight to the press and the internet to release the results, has been enough to overcome the bad science that characterises radiation risk.

Chris Busby's recently published Wolves of Water, (which LLRC calls a Science Wars Combat Manual) has information about how and where we have used questionnaire surveys, like the Aberystwyth Orange study. (see https://www.llrc.org/wings/subtopic/wolves.htm )

The paper which Chris Busby and Roger Coghill sent to Ceredigion Councillors in September 2006 is on the LLRC website https://www.llrc.org scroll down to the Mobile phones button on the left and follow the links.

Wireless City Projects

I was appalled to see the news about the planned blanket Wifi coverage in Brighton. Wifi systems use microwaves at a 2.4 GHz frequency (exactly the same as microwave ovens). There is an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence that long term low level exposure to microwaves causes cell damage in humans, animals and plants, leading to a wide range of illnesses. The health effects range from tinnitus, lack of concentration and insomnia to leakage of the blood brain barrier, spikes of high blood pressure and heart palpitations in the short term to the development of cancer in the long term. More and more people are also developing electrohypersensitivity (EHS) as a result of being exposed to low level microwaves from mobile transmitters and other wireless applications. The government currently advises GPs not to recognise this condition. However in Sweden where it is recognised and statistical data exist, the official estimate is that already 3% of the entire population suffer from this condition. This number is expected to rise as more people become permanently exposed. Just as with passive smoking, people will no longer be able to protect themselves from unwanted microwave exposure in a city with blanket wifi coverage. It is the duty of the government and local authority to protect its citizens’ health and safety by allowing them to have the choice not to be exposed. I urge the council to review this decision and adopt a precautionary approach to this issue.

I am so p... off with the Sussex Argus yet again not publishing any of the several letters written my MS members in response to its "Wireless City" cover story a week and a half ago, I have sent the following to four local newsletters in Brighton.

I am in no doubt whatsoever now that they are suppressing anti microwave letters due to the amount of publicity they give to the Telecom industrys products.

With years of almost total blanking from Councillors after sending information to all of them about the health damage caused by Mobile phone masts (and mobiles, DECT phones, WiFi, wireless baby monitors etc), I was surprised to see Councillor Jeane Lepper writing in April's Hollingdean News standing up for the rights of her constituents against the power of telecom companies to place their health damaging masts virtually anywhere.

This should be a major issue in the impending Council elections. The mountain of evidence proves conclusively that phone masts cause everything from cancer to strokes, leukaemia and Motor Neurone disease to epilepsy. This has been known to thousands of people campaigning against masts for years. Yet the Brighton Argus, as with most newspapers, continues to hype mobiles and WiFi relentlessly whilst printing almost none of the many letters sent to their letters page by myself and other concerned campaigners in Mast Sanity (www.mastsanity.org) trying to warn people of the harm these technologies are causing.

Jeane Leppers' article suggests that other Councillors would oppose further mast applications at the corner of Mountfields and The Crestway in Hollingdean. Why then, have these Councillors not responded to my emails over the years?

I suggest that anyone concerned about the virtually unopposed escalation in wireless technology in Brighton & Hove study the Mast Sanity website
( https://www.mastsanity.org ) and write to the Argus about the effects of this now almost unavoidable technology and the lack of any sane planning controls on their siting, before the forthcoming elections. People also need to know which Councillors will actually stand up for our rights on this issue if they are elected. Certainly not Councillor Roy Pennington, long term Vice Chair of the planning committee, who never refuses a mast whenever he has a casting vote as he thinks mast campaigners are all misinformed. I shudder to think of the health damage this man has caused to huge numbers of people.

In "On the Precautionary Approach and the Stewart & NRPB Reports", Dr Graeme Blackwell (see attachment) quotes from the UK Governments' own Stewart Report into the ICNIRP guidelines used everywhere as the safety measure for phone masts. Note that researchers worldwide are unanimous in that it is the pulsing frequency of the microwaves which cause the damage, NOT the thermal emissions of the masts. Measuring only the thermal emissions, ICNIRP guidelines are thus almost totally useless as safety criteria: "The balance of evidence suggests that exposures to radiation below NRPB and ICNIRP guidelines do not cause adverse health effects to the general population.

"There is now scientific evidence, however, which suggests that there may be biological effects occurring at exposures below these guidelines.

"We conclude therefore that it is not possible at present to say that exposure to RF radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health effects, and that the gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach.

"We recommend that a precautionary approach to the use of mobile phone technologies be adopted until much more detailed and scientifically robust information on any health effects becomes available."

Dr Blackwell:

"Note that the specific reason for advocating a precautionary approach is scientific evidence that exposure at levels "below NRPB and ICNIRP guidelines" may have adverse health effects. How, in the name of all that's rational, can the ICNIRP guidelines be reckoned to satisfy the need for a 'precautionary approach' that is specifically advocated PRECISELY BECAUSE scientific evidence indicates that there may be effects that those guidelines don't cover???

Interesting but not surprising that there is no thought given to the possible health effects. Do people realise that the frequencies used for wifi are higher than for mobile phones and the intensities emitted from the wifi transmitters will be of the same order of magnitude (measured in the street) as from a phone mast? These are phone masts by any other name coming to a street near you but with no planning permission needed at all! See https://www.mastsanity.org for what to expect in the way of symptoms if living near a wifi transmitter.

Brighton's fortnightly Kemptown Rag has come up trumps again and published yet another of my anti telecom rants (that makes about 4 now this year) as always uncensored!

GARY KEMP

We see constant reassurances from the telecoms industry that their phone masts are safe near schools and housing. Now Brighton and Hove Council wants to follow other major cities in covering us with WiFi - which emits exactly the same frequency microwaves as phone masts.

From 1993, in America for six years, the Telecoms Industry employed 200 research doctors – at a cost of $28.5 million – to study the safety of their microwave systems ( https://www.safewireless.org https://www.health-concerns.org ). The 15 epidemiological studies showed increased tumours, genetic damage, a greater risk to children, and damage to the blood-brain barrier. The scientist leading these studies predicted 30,000-50,000 cancers worldwide in 2006 alone - of just one type of cancer. These results were suppressed.

The Freiburger, Naila, Wolf, Hutter, Santini, Oberfeld, Bamberg (etc) studies ( https://www.radiationresearch.org ) all show increased cancers and illnesses from this industrys' microwaves.

MPs have three times raised the problem of clusters of children (11 or more) with leukaemia around masts (Hansard (21.5.04 & 1.3.05) . Since then another cluster of 12 children has emerged.

O2's Angela Johnson assures us that the World Health Organisation (WHO) allows them to plant their phone masts next to schools and housing. The WHOs' Radiation Health Protection Committee is responsible for the subject of Cellular Technology and Powerlines health effects. It's eight representatives are all mobile phone operator ex employees.

The chairman of this committee, Dr Michael Repacholi, recently resigned following revelations that he received 150,000 dollars a year directly from the cellular phone industry for meetings and travels. Repacholi is documented to have invited power industry representatives to review scientific work and participate in evaluating health standards of electromagnetic fields emitted by power lines. The names of these representatives are all documented. Repacholi systematically downplayed and ignored for years many scientific findings with one common ground: those which show that the cellular technology is not safe and cannot be freely distributed without a health price for the world population. He now works for the nuclear industry and was recently seen on a Panorama programme on nuclear power telling viewers that small amounts of radiation does you good..

Mercury in energy-saving bulbs worries scientists - Low-energy bulb disposal warning

https://www.truthout.org/issues_06/033007ED.shtml

--------

Low-energy bulb disposal warning

There's a short piece on the front cover of Today's Daily Telegraph (Sat 5th) which quotes someone as saying that up to 340,000 people in the UK could suffer from Eczema and skin cancer from the new energy saving bulbs.

Good the news is getting out and in plenty of time.

Haven't checked the other papers but imagine there is more coverage.

Maybe we could use this exposure (no pun int) to point up the health links from microwaves?

What never ceases to amaze me is how none of these reporters ever ask "If these devices can do this to God knows how many people, what are they doing to the rest of us?"
