Radiation fear at schools

This is the story in our local paper. If anyone would be so kind as to write them a quick response with some facts or anyone else that suffers from exposure that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Radiation fear at schools

15 February 2007

YOUNGSTERS at some Muswell Hill primary schools could have their health put at risk by new technology that hasn't been proven as safe, it is claimed.

Controversy continues to surround the possible dangers of using wireless internet connections in primary school classrooms - yet one school has had the technology for years and another is to make the leap in the near future.

Tetherdown primary school, in Grand Avenue, was one of the first schools to install the technology - which allows laptop computers to link to the internet wirelessly by using radio waves to beam information back and forth.

And Coldfall primary school, Coldfall Avenue, is set to follow soon.

But there is still debate over how much electromagnetic radiation a young child can safely be exposed to.

Current advice from the Health Protection Agency says increases in sensitivity "may occur in infants and children", but there is "no firm evidence" of exposure to such radiation having adverse health effects.

But a number of schools in the UK have dismantled their "wi-fi" networks after pressure from parents, and Austria's Salzburg public health department is one of many official bodies to have issued warnings about its effects, having advised all schools and nurseries not to install wi-fi at all.

Alasdair Philips, scientific and technical director of lobby group Powerwatch, said:

"It strikes us as completely irresponsible to be putting these in schools - particularly primary schools - without

the monitoring equipment to see if this is a sensible thing to do.

"It just seems so unnecessary. I can't see the great advantage of filling the whole school with radiation.

"The radiation levels are obviously weaker than from a mobile phone mast, but on the other hand you are sitting right on top of them.

"We are looking at connecting it with chronic fatigue, attention deficit disorder, headaches and more."

Sarah Purdy, whose children attend Tetherdown, argues the system hasn't been proved safe and has no educational benefits.

She said: "They just do it because it's new technology, but no-one has thought of beaming microwaves at children all day long.

"Why are we risking our children's lives when cabled computer systems are quite possible?

"The precautionary principle should prevail - we should not expose children unless this system is tested and proved safe, which it has not been to date. We have no option and our children are being irradiated."

Tetherdown has the system installed in its classrooms, but its head teacher Evelyn Pittman said: "We have had a lot of communication with parents and every aspect of the issue has been looked at, and I don't think it needs to be something that is discussed outside of that."

Plans are afoot to install wi-fi in Coldfall Wood Primary, but Carol O'Brien, head teacher at St James C of E Primary, Woodside Avenue, said her school didn't have wi-fi.

Muswell Hill Primary and Our Lady of Muswell Hill Primary schools did not respond before the Journal went to press.

Inspector throws out mast plan

By Jane Reader

A VICTORY for common sense. That is how a decision to refuse permission for a mobile phone mast to be put up near homes has been described.

Phone giants O2 appealed to the government when Bournemouth council turned down its application for a mast on land at the back of Warnford Road.

But an inspector has backed residents and has told O2 to go back to the drawing board.

Inspector Phil Grainger, appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said the proposed mast would adversely affect the quality of life for nearby residents, who have been concerned about health implications.

"It would be plainly visible from some houses and the concern caused would detract from the well-being of their occupiers," the inspector concluded. "I dismiss the appeal."

O2 applied for permission for the mast due to concerns over limited reception in the area.

But the inspector concluded it had not properly examined other potential sites further away from homes and schools, such as Iford playing fields or Iford Meadows.

Cllr Dr John Millward said: "This is a victory for common sense and it will give hope to other people who are campaigning against phone masts. As far as I am concerned there is no doubt that this technology is harmful."

The proposed mast would have been disguised as a telegraph pole, another element which provoked criticism from Dr Millward.

He added: "People should know where they are and how many of them there are - they should not be disguised." But he warned: "People want mobile phones with good reception but they don't want masts. It is something everyone should think about."

Hands free, but mind-free? This is why we must have masts along our highways.

Again surprising the driving studies citing effects lingering after use of phones and being more than just a distraction are missing.

Not Just Phones

In response to Andy Gilbert's rubbishing of Gary Kemp's earlier concerns about mobile phones (Letters, Jan 11), I would like to inform readers of an article entitled "The mobile phone - a radiating way of dying?" written by Swedish comedian and author Peter Wahlbeck.

In it, he writes "Some time ago I got headaches and got eye problems when talking in my mobile phone. I have felt this before and therefore always used hands-free. Nevertheless, my sensititivity has increased so much I cannot use my mobile phone any more."

"In Stockholm, I recently met a friend who is a teacher and he told me he had the same problem but "it is nothing compared to my students" he said, and told me about students who got tinnitus, headache, sleeping problems."

He also describes a book called "The game of 3G", written by Mona Nilsson and Marica Lindblad: "Research results from scientific journals from Hungary, Israel, France, USA, Spain, Austria and Russia are gone through. They show unanimously that mobile phone radiation is detrimental and that the radiation from masts is dangerous for humans and their genes."

Results of independent studies showing harm from all wireless devices which use microwaves - baby alarms, DECT phones, cordless computers, WiFi, masts etc, have long been distressingly uniform.

Crash families' mobile phone plea

It seems that the judge in this case was not appraised of the research showing that mobile calls affect you for some time after use, and are not just a distraction: https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/staffordshire/6291911.stm

New penalties: https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6287005.stm

require better detection. (Like standing with a camera on an average city road ...?)

Sadly, the research showing that hands-free in vehicles can be even worse also has passed the judiciary by.

-----Original Message-----
From: Judith M Davies

FYI - There is a possibility that the second You and Yours programme on Wifi in schools will be on Monday (radio 4 at noon). Michael Bevington, the teacher from Stowe with ES, has been pre-recorded and there will be an establishment scientist.

Apparently there were complaints after the last programme of bias on our side! But actually they will have had 2 scientists speaking, and parents and teachers on our side. This bias needs pointing out.

It may be possible to phone in during the programme, as well as afterwards - 0800 044 044 or email - https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/youandyours/youandyours_contact.shtml

Please pass the message on.

Monday is also the day for the BBC Breakfast News to do its piece on Wifi/ES and this date seems fairly certain. Dr Fox and teacher husband, both of whom were made ill from wireless networks may be on it.

WiFi and Electrosensitivity

To be circulated widely to all Electrosensitives and media interested in the science.

Today in the UK the media is very interested in WiFi and ES.

BBC Breakfast News TV. Richard Westcott covered the topic very well at 8.15 am.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/breakfast/6278199.stm

BBC Radio 5 Live at 8am (no link as yet)

BBC Radio 4 at noon today.

Plus the Times on Saturday on mobile phone study and cancer!

Three top international scientists, all of whom have done original research on ES and on WiFi effects on human health. Please quote these scientists, if and when you are interviewed on this topic, each of whom has been briefed and expects media interest.

Dr. Med. Univ. Gerd Oberfeld Tel. Salzburg ++43 (0)662) 8042 - 2969 Fax ++43 (0)662) 8042 - 3056 gerd.oberfeld @salzburg.gv.at

Dr Oberfeld is in the Salzburg public health dept.It is their official advice not to put wireless computers in schools and nurseries.

Prof Olle Johansson Sweden +468-52 48 70 58 olle.johansson @ki.se Karolinska Institute, Sweden Prof Johansson has many papers on EMFs, ES, WiFi among other subjects. His advice is also that children should not be exposed to this radiation

Dr George Carlo glac44 @aol.com USA 571-277-1332 Dr Carlo headed up the $28 million USA phone industry brain tumour research programme from 1993 to 1999. On finding evidence of genetic damage and increase in brain tumours his contract was terminated! He also advises that schools should not put in WiFi but use cabled networks. WiFi in Schools

Basically all our children are being exposed now to radiation in their schools, which have installed WiFi. The transmitters (access points) emit radiation at 6 v/m as do the cards in the laptops. Emissions from a phone mast usually do not exceed 1 v/m in a building near a phone mast. The guidelines allow for a max exposure of 61 v/m. However since these guidelines only prevent heating effects, they are irrelevant when considering other effects at sub heating levels, such as cancer or headaches and concentration problems.

WiFi systems have never been pre market tested for safety.

The Stewart committee recommended that a school and parents have a right to refuse permission to allow the beam of max intensity from a phone mast fall on its grounds, as they did not want children to be exposed as they are felt to be more at risk than adults. This was reinforced in the Dept of Education Guidelines. However it is not included in planning law so has no teeth.

With kind regards

Wi-Fi fears for school children

DAN GRIMMER

24 November 2006 09:41

Council bosses who pioneered Norwich as a Wi-Fi hotspot have today allayed fears that the wireless computer networks could damage people's health.

Campaigners have for years called for no more mobile phone masts to be built near schools or homes because it has not been proved they are not harmful to health.

And now concern has been raised as to whether the low levels of radiation emitted by transmitters used in the wireless technology could be harmful to health.

Norwich North MP Ian Gibson has called for more research to be conducted into potential dangers after parent power forced some schools elsewhere in the country to ditch the wireless networks.

He said: “We need a departmental inquiry into this situation. The Department of Health should be looking into it seriously. What we really need is another inquiry like the William Stewart report into mobile phone masts.”

The health scare comes at a time when the city is leading the way with the technology. In August the £1.1m Norfolk Open Link project was launched in the city.

The two-year pilot project, managed by Norfolk County Council and funded by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), means people can get free broadband internet access.

It covers most of the city centre as well as key sites such as UEA, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Norwich Science Park.

More than 200 small aerials have been fixed to lampposts to create the network, with the main internet connection on top of County Hall.

Kurt Frary, Norfolk Open Link project manager at Norfolk County Council, said: “The technology used for Norfolk Openlink is similar to that used in some modern mobile phones and laptops and it has been well received by people in Norwich. All aerials are sited high on lampposts and buildings so that they are at least 30cm from the user.”

But in other parts of the country parent power has sparked schools to ditch their wireless networks.

Wi-Fi, your questions answered:

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and enables data to be transmitted over a wireless network.

This means people can get a rapid connection to the internet without the need for cables.

It works using antennae to create Wi-Fi hotspots. These hotspots receive radiowaves which are then encoded and sent to Wi-Fi compatible equipment such as computers and mobile telephones.

Norfolk Open Link is the first large-scale community wireless network of this type in the UK to use lamp posts to host over 200 access points.

The network features more than 200 small Telabria APM 300 aerials, fixed to existing street furniture and buildings, mostly lampposts so that no masts have been needed.

Each aerial has a 250m to 300m reception radius.

The aerials feed signals back to “backhaul” sites which then link back to County Hall up to the project's 40mb internet link.

The output power of wireless networks like Norfolk Open Link is very low (0.1 watts) and, as the equipment is not held against the user's head, there is very little exposure to radio wave energy.

Do you know of a school which has banned Wi-Fi? Or are you a parent campaigning to get it banned at the school your children go to? If so telephone Evening News reporter Dan Grimmer on 01603 772375 or email dan.grimmer @archant.co.uk.

Will a WiFi network harm your children?

ANNA DAVIS

EVENING STANDARD
Monday November 20

CAMPAIGNERS have called for parents to remove wireless computer networks from their homes amid fears for children's health.

It comes as some schools have dismantled their wireless systems - known as WiFi - and gone back to using cables in case radiation emitted by transmitters harms pupils.

Scientific evidence is inconclusive, but some researchers believe low-level radiation causes loss of concentration, headaches, fatigue, behavioural problems and possibly cancer.

They say children could be more at risk because of their thinner skulls and developing nervous systems.

Karen Barratt, from campaign group Mast Sanity, said: "There is no good reason to have something like that in your house apart from the fact it is a lot tidier not to have cables. But it is worth having a bit of mess to protect children's health."

Some schools use transmitters in classrooms to give pupils access from laptops to the school computer network and the internet.

Last month, a group of parents at the Prebendal School in Chichester, West Sussex, successfully lobbied the headteacher to remove wireless networks.

At Ysgol Pantycelyn, a comprehensive in Carmarthenshire, governors also agreed with parents' requests to switch off its wireless network.

Parent Judith Davies said: "Many people campaign against mobile phone masts near schools, but there is a great deal of ignorance about wireless computer networks. Yet they are like having a phone mast in the classroom."

Professor Sir William Stewart, chairman of independent body the Health Protection Agency, said that while there is no hard information, evidence that microwave radiation can have harmful effects has become "more persuasive" recently.

Schools abandon wireless revolution

NICK MCDERMOTT

Daily Mail
Monday November 20, 2006

A GROWING number of schools are removing wireless Internet connections amid health fears.

Wireless hubs have been installed by many schools to allow staff and pupils online access from any part of the building using laptops.

But many researchers believe the radiation from the transmitters can cause loss of concentration and memory, headaches and even cancer, with children more susceptible because of their thinner skulls.

After intense lobbying from worried parents, Tim Cannell, headteacher of Prebandal School, in Chichester, West Sussex, agreed to remove the network from his school's grounds.

'We listened to the parents' views and they were obviously very concerned,' Mr Cannell told the Times. 'The authorities say it's safe, but there have been no long-term studies to prove this.' Headteacher Hywel Pugh removed the wireless network at Ysgol Pantycelyn, a comprehensive in Carmarthenshire, following complaints by teachers and parents, while part of the wireless system was switched off at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire after a teacher fell ill.

A spokesman for the Department of Education and Skills said: 'It is up to individual schools to decide on this.'

Why I will never read an ebook

She has so far had some very rude comments. She was trying to write a novel about phone mast! But it has been dropped as the editor says there will be no interest. She thought if we write in to this blog and show interest it may help!

The blog is on The Guardian site!
