Who is funding cancer research now?

A world-class centre of excellence in Cambridge, set to speed up the delivery of new ways of diagnosing, treating and preventing cancer, has entered its final phase of development today.

Leading figures from funding bodies, key stakeholders and the construction project team will gather at the Addenbrooke¹s Hospital campus to celebrate the topping out of the University of Cambridge - Hutchison - Cancer Research UK Laboratory Building.

The £42 million project involves construction of 14,000 square metres of research laboratories which will house up to 300 scientists. Funding is provided by Cancer Research UK (£14 million) and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd (£16.5 million), with the remainder coming from the University of Cambridge and an anonymous donor.

Ray O¹Rourke, Chief Executive of Laing O¹Rourke, the main contractor, welcomed more than eighty guests to the ceremony. He said: ³We are delighted to have reached this important point of this significant construction project. We now look forward to reaching a successful conclusion of this major landmark building.²

The striking five-storey building designed by Anshen/Dyer architects, will provide open plan glass-walled research facilities, a 200-seat seminar theatre, a restaurant and an exhibition area. It will add further strength to the ground-breaking cancer research already in Cambridge. Fostering collaboration between scientists and doctors, improved approaches to cancer diagnosis treatment and prevention will be developed for the benefit of cancer patients.

Innovative research is planned, including cancer genetics and the study of the earliest stages of cancer development. Bioinformatics, which is increasingly important for analysing complex research data, will be developed jointly with the University¹s Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Professor Alison Richard, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge said: "We are celebrating a significant milestone for cancer research worldwide. I am deeply appreciative of the significant funds provided for this facility by Hutchison Whampoa and Cancer Research UK. It is gratifying that these funds are a reflection of the outstanding quality of the research being done in this area at the University of Cambridge.²

Professor Bruce Ponder, Cancer Research UK Professor of Oncology, University of Cambridge said: ³I am delighted that Cambridge has again been recognised as a world leader in medical science. The partnership between the University of Cambridge and Cancer Research UK will make a unique contribution to turning cancer research into cancer treatment."

Cancer Research UK's Chief Executive, Professor Alex Markham, said: "We're very excited by the plan for the new Centre, which will put Cambridge at the forefront of cancer research not only in the UK, but indeed the world. Exciting plans for research at the Centre are already under way and we expect new cancer therapies to reach clinical trials in Cambridge as a direct result. Results from these trials should benefit cancer patients worldwide."

Sir Ka-Shing Li, Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa, commented that he is happy to make a contribution to what is clearly one of the world's most important centres for Cancer Research. He is also delighted that links between Cambridge University and Hutchison continue to strengthen in both the medical research and the general educational fields, thus contributing to the two-way flow of expertise and knowledge between Hong Kong, China and the United Kingdom.

The construction project is being managed by the University¹s Estate Management and Building Service. It is the biggest single construction project the University has ever undertaken and marks only Phase One of a two-part research development on the Addenbrooke¹s campus. Phase One began on site in July 2003, and is set to be complete in Autumn 2005. It is one of several projects made possible by the recently-opened staff multi-storey car park which has freed up land for development.

Fear and loathing on the school bus

The Sussex Argus published my letter EDITED as below - today.

Gary

The article "Fear and loathing on the school bus" ) describing childrens yobbishness on buses (Argus October 12) is just one in a series of recent items to report rise in such behaviour.

Your reporter observed, "a third of teenagers eat a doughnut or chocolate bar with Coke for breakfast". Diet and non diet drinks, including Coke, contain Aspartame of which there are 92 documented symptoms, including headaches, nausea, weight gain, brain tumours, epilepsy, slurred speech, and vision and hearing problems.

The American College of Physicians says: "We are talking about a plague of neurological disease, caused by this deadly poison".

Most children also use mobile phones. As long ago as 1998, the Daily Mail reported: "Scientists at the Defence Establishment Research Agency have admitted the microwave signals from mobile phones can disrupt parts of the brain involved in memory and learning, raise blood pressure and depress vital brain hormones such as melatonin.....as well as showing an increase in brain cancer in mobile phone users. The potential consequences of exposing our children to such radiation is extremely alarming".

Sir William Stewart also warned against children under sixteen using mobiles and siting tranmsmitters near schools (The Stewart Report, 2000) but has since been ignored.

The connections between these things and yobbish behaviour seem obvious to me.

The Welsh Assembly voted unanimously for the GPDO to be revoked and henceforth for all masts and like structures in Wales to be subject to full planning permission

Some month ago, a Plaid Cymru member of the Welsh Assembly won the 'ballot' for introducing the equivalent of a parliamentary private member's Bill and contacted Mast Sanity with a view to introducing 'something to do with telecoms planning'. I liased with Chris Maile who rose immediately to the challenge and, overnight, drafted a motion seeking revocation of the General Permitted Development Order (Wales) in terms of telecommunications installations.

This proposal survived various arcane processes as it went forward during the following weeks and today, 12th October, the Welsh Assembly voted unanimously for the GPDO to be revoked and henceforth for all masts and like structures in Wales to be subject to full planning permission. Full details are awaited from Chris, but this is very good news and serves to put pressure on the 'English' parliament. The MOA will not be happy!

David

--------

The Welsh Assemly have voted 41 for and 0 against the recommendations contained within a report of the Assembly committe that was charged with the investigation of Mobile Phone Base Stations after the February motion on telecoms.

We must congratulate Plaid Cymru for pushing this forward, they first contact Mast Sanity asking for help in formulating a motion, that was passed on to PS (me) by David Baron and I drafted the first draft for Plaids Feb motion. This shows what can be done when activists work with politicians of what ever party on issues that are important. This was the best result for Wales, albeit that the First Minister now has an opportunity to make some amendments, and therefgore the strengh of the proposals may be watered down, but nevertheless with such a vote it will be difficult for the First Minister to by pass the main issues, which is to make all telecoms in Wales determined by full planning. The full report (which I have not yet fully read) is very interesting and a useful tool to put pressure on the UK Parliament to adopt similar policies for the whole UK.

I shall be drafting a media release that will go out tomorrow and will post a copy to this listing.

"Misguided" ban on mobiles in hospitals?

This article appeared in the Daily Mail this morning.

"Hospitals accused over "misguided" ban on mobiles." Hospitals should not ban mobile phones over "mythical" risks to patients, say experts. They believe the benefits far outweigh the negligible dangers of using mobiles near sensitive medical equipment and accuse managers of hiding behind over-zealous safety concerns. Freeing up restrictions could benefit doctors and other health staff, while patients would not have to use expensive bedside phones systems. An editorial in the British Medical Journal today accuses hospitals of acting in a draconian fashion in banning mobiles. Sociology lecturer Dr. Adam Burgess of Kent University, and Dr. Stuart Derbyshire, of Birmingham University say there is no evidence they cause problems in most wards. A 1997 study by the Medical Devices Agnecy showed mobiles affected just four per cent of medical devices at a distance of one metre. But the figure was ten times higher for the handsets used by porters and emergency services personnel. The intereference was "ultimately harmless" although it could trigger alarms and meant electrocardiograph recordings had to be repeated. Dr. Burgess said phones affected pacemeakers but only when they were held against the patient's chest. He said ringtones could be irritating but were not a risk, adding "Concerns about patient safety do not justify zealously enforced no-phone areas, which can cause arguments between staff, patients and visitors". And he claimed the motives for hospital managers maintaining no-mobile zones were open to question, as they might lose revenue from companies that run pay-as-you-go bedside line services. Bans are an easy target for managers in an era of anxiety about patient safety. But many patients would prefer using their own mobiles rather than costly in-house systems. He added: "Restrictions on mobile phone use can be implemented easily because they seem relatively inconsequential, and the restrictions make people think safety concerns are being taken seriously." But Dr. Burgess fears managers could still bring in rules to keep mobiles out of wards, perhaps by barring camera phones to protect patient's privacy. The practical problems of identifying such phones might lead to a total ban in practice. He said, "We want hospital managers and clinical directors to adopt a more flexible approach to the use of mobile phones on the basis that the advantages clearly outweigh their largely mythical risks." An agency spokesman said there should not be a blanket ban. But he added: "The agency recommends mobile phones are not used in critical care areas such as intensive therapy units, special care baby units or where patients are attached to complex devices."

Regards, V.

(note - the word "mythical" appearing and Dr. Burgess is back on the scene!)

--------

There is quite clearly an MOA agenda here - firstly because the thrust is solely on decrying the risk associated with mobile phone radiation and, secondly, because that well-known buffoon Burgess has been let out of the Mad Hatter's company to tell his traditional fairy stories.

Ten years ago, I fell off the roof and shattered my left knee and tibia. Surgery to rebuild the damage was carried out on the following day and I spent a further 9 days in a hospital ward of 12 occupied, and quite tightly packed, beds. Think of the future as considered acceptable by these fools - the prospect of people lying for days on end in pain or considerable discomfort at the same time surrounded by punters chattering inanely on their mobiles for 24 hrs a day. What price recovery?

David

--------

I have just sent this to the BBC:

I believe your recent story 'Doctors attack mobile phone rules' shows significant bias toward the mobile phone industry's stand point. As well as the risk of equipment malfunctions which was not ruled out the major risk to recovering patients is the microwave signals used by these devices. These signals have been shown time and time again to cause biological damage; double-strand DNA breaks (see https://tinyurl.com/y8r2ce - a direct stepping stone to cancer, damaging the blood brain barrier ( https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2053565.stm ) etc. See https://www.schnews.co.uk/archive/news561.htm for a very informative article. Do you think someone recovering from cancer should be using a mobile phone? Your story has not taken any of these risks into account and has actually put the words 'Mythical Risks' in bold. While your story has focused only on risks to equipment malfunction, the fact that these other risks are ignored gives the impression that equipment malfunction risks are the only ones that should be taken into account. Do you not consider this a form of lying by omission? Every time I have seen a story that touches on the scientific evidence of health risks, the mobile phone industry is given a chance to lambaste the research with some well spun propaganda, however when the mobile phone industry puts out a PR story I do not see the same opportunities given to the many groups who are trying to raise awareness of these very real, well researched, peer reviewed and proven dangers. I consider this to be biased reporting on an issue that desperately needs to be highlighted.

Can you believe this? I don't believe it ! Aaaaaagh.

I think everyone should send Tom Watson an email complaining about his lack of knowledge on this subject and therefore his ability to comment. He is a local MP in Sandwell and has publicly supported our campaigns against the siting of masts in his constituency. Was this just a vote getter?

The effects of mobiles on equipment is still under some doubt, but the intrusion of these phones on patients and visitors alike would be unbearable. Can you imagine what it would be like with dozens of people, especially teenagers and the like playing games, constantly texting, loud conversations all over the place. This would also justify additional masts close by to cope with the extra traffic. Hell on earth.

Not only this, but Tom Watson must be made aware of the adverse health implications that go along with increasing over use of these Devils toys. Maybe he should encourage and promote the continued use of land lines in hospitals at a cheap rate.

Sleep Laboratory: investigating how sleep affects performance

Apparently, Qinetiq have a sleep laboratory (saw it on a programme last night - Men in White)

https://www.qinetiq.com/home/technologies/technologies/Sub_Landing1/facilities/sleeplab.html

Qinetiq half owns QS4, who are a base station site provider - they are offering the shared technology on Churches round the country.

It seems rather ironic - I wonder if they've discovered a link themselves with the effects of EMF!

A well known artist, Gillian Wise, with her website at https://www.gillianwise.com/ is contacting us to distribute news of an important lawsuit taking place in Paris this month. Can anyone raise press interest?

"Paris Sept 29 2006

Dear Rod Read

A quick note – a big affair* re electronics is happening on the 17th October – Palais De Justice (near Notre Dame).

A Black Joan of Arc’ has appeared, to take on the operators of the mobile phone networks ALONE, a scientific journalist.

Annie Lobe

(See Nextup website and also her personal one)

She’s brought out two books in the last months, with heavy-duty stuff (needs to be translated into English.) (A test of the seriousness of the UK associations). I predict they will try to bury her existence. The operators are going nuts & have her up for two trials (defamation). I went to the first day of the first one – her treatment was pretty disgraceful & amounted to (racial?) harassment. The case was then put off until the 17th.

Meanwhile the Mayor of Paris has posted on the official website – that there are NO harmful effects from antennae & masts END OF STORY.

The Greens’ – (the majority on the City Hall Committee) requested he take that off, he refused. Meanwhile a whistle-blower revealed the neutral experts’, (who measured the effects) were secretly in the pay of the operators. This was confirmed in Le Monde (this info was buried deep in files – never to be revealed!). This weakens the vicious attacks on Annie Lobe – the information came out 2 days after the adjournment.

She will call 10 witnesses, the operators trawled through years of her articles & found a phrase in 2003; saying people were dying under rooves with antennae.

Most of her witnesses are people with expertise, coming from all over France. The details of the 17th court case are on NEXTUP. The Nextup site is covering her defence costs, they are highly respected especially for the technical information.

Please alert the UK press and/or other media, this story has legs & could go international.

The operators will expend vast efforts (and cash) to suppress reporting .. the usual affair .. is that she will get a large fine (for telling the truth shades of WMD) Perhaps 10,000 Euros.

At some point decent people will have to insist on the truth, NOT the formula of discrediting victims & their defenders.

SO do your best, the website should liase with NEXTUP, I know the director – he is very competent & active with high-level backing.

The lawyers of the operators reduced Annie Lobe to tears – several times –
(with malice?). A distinguished Black professional (her African father was in court) Afterwards she was still distraught at the treatment, we all felt outrage. She is a fine person. Mr Nextup promised her every assistance.

Sincerely,
Gillian Wise"

Hyping mobile phones for children

Have just sent the following to The Argus

Gary

The recent Argus article (October 4th) hyping mobile phones for children reported outdated advice by Sir William Stewart of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) on the subject.

The NRPB has been superceded by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in regulating the health effects of mobile phones and the vast range of other microwave devices on the market.

The article failed to disclose recent announcements - as published in the London Evening Standard on September 19th - by Dr Jill Meara of the HPA, who said: "If there are risks - and we think that there could be - then the people who are going to be most affected are children," and "We will not know for several years what the real risks of mobile phones are."

Pakistan, Poland and Austria long ago banned children under 16 from using mobiles due to health concerns and the UK Government officially recommends they only use them in emergencies.

From 1993, in America for six years, the Communications Industry employed 200 research doctors – at a cost of $28.5 million – to study the safety of their microwave systems. In all, 15 epidemiological studies were carried out. They showed increased tumours, genetic damage, a greater risk to children, and damage to the blood-brain barrier; The research scientist leading these studies has predicted 30,000-50,000 cancers worldwide this year alone - of just one type of cancer.

This is the industry's own research.

The safety level set by our Government for masts, which emit identical microwave radiation to phones, is for short-term heating effects only, and is incorrectly relied upon by decision-makers for planning applications for masts. Both the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety and the US Environmental Protection Agency agree on this. It is invalid for communities living near masts.

ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS 'TOUGHENING UP' POLICIES TO CONTROL TELECOMMUNICATIONS MASTS

The National Assembly's EPC Committee has considered the planning process by which permissions for telecommunication masts are granted. The Committee's recommendation will now be put before a full session of the National Assembly on 11th of October when AM's will decide on a series of proposals designed to introduce new controls on the development of masts. Commenting on the Committee proposals, Chair Glyn Davies said: "We are making proposals which will introduce much greater control by Local Planning Authorities on the location of new telecommunication masts. The Committee is proposing that masts below 15feet in height should, for the first time, have to secure planning permission before they can go ahead. We also believe that the Minister should give clearer guidance to Local Planning Authorities about how they take Health Impact Assessments into account. And we also recommended that the Government strengthens its Code of Practice on mobile phone network development. Many people, the length and breadth of Wales, are deeply concerned about the impact of telecommunications masts and we have made proposals to the Assembly Government which would help satisfy some of these concerns. It will be up to the AM's to decide which of these proposals are accepted."
