I wondered whether there could be a connection with mobile phones - we all know that heavy users just can't help themselves....but now it appears that they have a facility to use them on these planes anyway. Just coming in to land is the time most likely for addicts to reach for the buttons.

Re: Was Wi-Fi Behind the Boeing 777 Crash In London?

In the last three weeks tha BA PLANE is the third plane I have read about
that has had a total loss of power. I wonder why this was not mentioned by
the media.

Ex OFCOM chief appointed Gordon Brown's chief strategist

Gordon Brown has tried to sharpen up his Downing Street operation after a trouble-hit three months by appointing the head of a public relations company as his new chief strategist.

Stephen Carter, the 43-year-old chief executive of the Brunswick communications group and former head of the media regulator Ofcom, will become the Prime Minister's chief of strategy and principal adviser on a salary of £137,000. He will head the political operation in No 10 and Mr Brown's team of 18 special advisers.

....................

Mr Carter is not a Labour member but will rejoin the party. He was a member until he joined Ofcom in 2003. He will attend cabinet meetings as an observer and be in charge of political strategy, communications, research and the No 10 policy unit. Although not a close ally of Mr Brown, the Prime Minister knew his new recruit "by reputation" and the two men had met several times. Mr Brown is a friend of Alan Parker, the founder of Brunswick. "I am delighted Stephen Carter has accepted my invitation to join the Downing Street team as we build our programme and pursue an ambitious legislative programme," said Mr Brown.

How safe is Wifi?

Being exposed to the microwave (2.45GHz) radiation constantly emitted by WiFi routers is as safe as being in the main beam from a phone mast. But is that safe? Comparing the levels with those emitted by a mobile phone is not very helpful since we do not know those are safe either! There is evidence in some studies of longer term users of increased brain tumour risk on the side of the head they hold the mobile. There are reports of cancer clusters around phone masts but the government refuse to investigate. However 2 scientific studies in other countries show a trebling of cancer risk for exposure under 10 years . It may be more informative to compare the levels of microwaves with those that naturally existed up until 15 years ago when this technology started. You would find the levels are up to trillions of times higher now because the background microwave level is virtually zero. Is it sensible to compare these with light or with what used to exist in the microwave part of the spectrum? The European wide REFLEX project found human DNA shattered after short exposure to the levels we are exposed to now. The radiation intensity in the main beam from a phone mast is the same order of magnitude as a few meters from a WiFi router. (You can hire measuring equipment and see for yourself) These levels are below guidelines which is why the HPA is so confident about its study. However the guidelines are only intended to protect from short term heat shocks and do not protect against long term lower levels of exposure where heating is not the issue. All the independent scientists are calling for a revision of these out of date guidelines.

If you must have WiFi rather than cables then I would advise turn it off when not in use and especially at night.

Campaigners dismayed by mast appeal blow

KIM BRISCOE
18 December 2007 15:00

Families living on the outskirts of Norwich fear they will now get a phone mast in the centre of their village after a decision to refuse planning permission was overturned on appeal.

More than 80 people had objected to plans for the 11.7metre T-Mobile mast on land opposite the Crown pub in Norwich Road, New Costessey, after application was submitted.

PHONE MASTS WARNING: Risks have been played down

STUDY

Wednesday November 28,2007

By Jo Macfarlane

HEALTH risks from mobile phone masts and wireless technology are being played down, experts say.

A review published yesterday concludes the electromagnetic impulses the masts transmit can affect the immune system and neurological functions.

Tories call for mobile phone ban in schools

Respect my authority, kids

Mobile phones would be outlawed in UK classrooms under Conservative Party plans to beef up discipline in schools.

The Tories said in an education policy document that they wanted to see authority returned to teachers. They reckoned an important part of that proposal would include a crackdown on the use of mobile phones.

David Cameron et al want to see more power handed to teachers because of concerns over disruptive behaviour and bullying in the classroom and school playground, including the increase in "happy slapping" incidents among teenagers using camera phones.
