CAMPAIGNERS have defeated plans for a mobile phone mast.

Councillors yesterday refused permission for the 18-metre structure off Station Road in Marsden.

Mobile phone operator Vodafone wanted to erect a 15.2 metre timber pole on land next to Marsden Railway Station’s overspill car park. Six antennae would have taken the total height to 18.4 metres.

More than 100 residents wrote to Kirklees Council to object to the proposal. Complaints included loss of visual amenity, possible health risks and the impact on tourism in the village.

Cellphone towers similar to the one planned for Atawhai - which has sparked a petition from outraged residents - are also likely to be erected at other sites in Nelson, Stoke and Richmond, as Telecom seeks to develop a whole new mobile phone network.
