Take Action! Local Wolves Facing Grave Threat!

Thank you to those of you who took action on this last year. Unfortunately Idaho is still determined to de-list wolves. We need your help again.

Idaho Governor "Butch" Otter has said the state will seek to kill 75% of the wolf population; Idaho's official position (based on House Joint Memorial 5 which prefaces the Idaho wolf Management plan) calls for removing all wolves from Idaho "by any means necessary".

Your help is urgently needed!

Your comments are due May 9th and can be made electronically by emailing: NRMGrayWolf@fws.gov , include "RIN number 1018-AU58" in the subject line of the message. By mail to: US Fish and Wildlife Service, Wolf Delisting, 555 Shepard Way, Helena MT 59601 or by fax to: (405) 449-5339

Talking Points: I oppose the Fish and Wildlife Service's proposal to delist of the gray wolf.

The Endangered Species Act requires that the gray wolf be fully recovered before it can be delisted, and that States like Wyoming and Idaho have responsible plans in place to manage wolf populations. The Fish & Wildlife Service should wait to propose delisting under the Endangered Species Act until all the factors that once led to wolf eradication are adequately addressed. Such plans must be in place in every state in the Northern Rockies region and are an essential part of the delisting process.

Today wolves are not ready to lose federal protection because:

- The Wyoming and Idaho plans will not protect wolves. Wolf management should not be turned over to states whose state plans do not provide sufficient protections to ensure wolf populations exist into the future.

- The FWS should not be including portions of adjacent states into the proposed area for delisting, especially where the adjacent states have asked not to be included. Washington State is just starting the development of its own wolf plan and does not want the FWS splitting off 1/3 of the state for differing levels of protection.

- Because wolves travel easily across state borders, protections in the Northern Rockies should not be lifted until all states (Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana) have wolf plans that can provide the continued protections wolves need to survive. The boundaries FWS drew for including parts of Oregon and Washington don't make sense for any potential wolf recovery in these states. The FWS has said the areas where federal protections would be lifted would be high conflict areas for wolves, but these are also the very areas wolves must travel through to recolonize elsewhere in the state.

- Robust wolf populations in Idaho and Wyoming are essential to return wolves to Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Utah, which are all part of the gray wolf's historic range.

- Wyoming would allow wolves to be shot on sight in most of the State, and the Fish and Wildlife Service has rejected Wyoming's management plan.

- Idaho Governor Butch Otter has said the state will seek to kill 75% of the wolf population; Idaho's official position (based on House Joint Memorial 5 which prefaces the Idaho wolf Management plan) calls for removing all wolves from Idaho "by any means necessary". It is not clear that current wolf populations are adequate to ensure recovery in the region. Human population growth, habitat development and disease present ongoing challenges to wolf recovery.

In the meantime, we can do more to help wolves and the people who are experiencing conflicts with them:

The Fish and Wildlife Service could and should do more to help resolve conflicts with livestock owners, using non-lethal methods where possible.

Before wolves can be delisted:

- Every state with wolf populations must have a credible plan in place to maintain healthy, sustainable wolf populations.

- The Fish and Wildlife Service must thoroughly examine how trends in habitat loss could increase human-caused mortality of wolves, and take steps to avoid any future harm to the wolves.

- The Fish and Wildlife Service must establish a science-based ecosystem approach to wolf recovery.

- There must be demonstrated wolf movement between the populations of Yellowstone, central Idaho and Glacier.

- There must be adequate funding in place to ensure that healthy wolf populations can be maintained; currently there are no guarantees of adequate funding.

This is your opportunity to save these animals! Don't let it, and the wolves, disappear!

Celebrate Earth Day by taking action for wild cats and canines around the world today!

Help Save Cats & Dogs

Clouded Leopard, GNU, Nancy Vandermey

Every day, unsung heroes around the world work to save the planet’s clouded leopards, jaguars, wolves and other endangered great cats and rare canines. Some bring emergency vaccinations to save the world’s last Ethiopian wolves from rabies outbreaks. Others teach Namibian farmers to live peacefully with Africa’s vanishing wild dogs. Some even brave Himalayan snows to protect rare and beautiful snow leopards from poachers’ guns.

Defenders of Wildlife is supporting a bill in Congress that would finally give these heroes the support they need -- but we’re going to need your help to get it passed.

DELARA'S DEATH SENTENCE ADVANCES

URGENT APPEAL FOR INTERVENTION

Approval of Delara's Death Sentence in Distinction Branch of the Supreme Court
https://www.savedelara.com/news.html

A source familiar with Delara's case reports that Delara's death sentence has been approved and the order will be soon issued to her lawyer.

Delara Darabi, accused of murder, has spent the past 3 years in prison. Recent beatings in prison have left her with a broken arm and she is not feeling well.

Yesterday, Delara's father filed a letter with the head of the judiciary, seeking a transfer of prison for his daughter. In this letter, Delara's father states: "Delara is in dire condition and is suffering greatly. She is only accused. We have reasons to show that she is not a murderer. However, even if she were guilty, she has a basic right to be treated fairly in prison, not to have her arm broken. If Delara is a murderer, she should be executed once, not a thousand times. Yet, in Rasht prison, she is executed a thousand times a day. I need your help to save my daughter."

According to our reporter, given the approval of Delara's death sentence by the Distinction Branch of the Supreme Court, the only person who can commute this sentence is the head of the judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi. By finding fault in the case, he can issue a new trial.

CLARIFICATION REGARDING NEWS SOURCES AND ACCURACY:

Today I received a letter from Lily Mazahery addressing the conflicting information we have received regarding Delara, Reza and other children on Death Row in Iran.

To clarify all confusion once and for all, I wish to inform everyone who has worked with such dedication on these cases that Lily's information is the accurate source.

She receives her information from an award winning journalist in Iran before it goes to the Etemad newspaper. Once it is submitted to the newspaper it undergoes radical censorship alterations. This is where all distortions arise.

Further to this, Lily is in direct communication with Delara's lawyer. The journalist who submits all of her articles to Lily is also in regular contact with Mr. Khoramshahi. Every aspect of each of her reports are verified before she submits them to Lily.

I hope this dispells all further confusion. This is not only the best source for information regarding the children, at present it is our only reliable source.

Below is a sample of the misinformed coverage based on censored news:

Delara Darabi Update We have been receiving few inquiries from the concerned Delara Darabi campaign supporters about recent news and the mass emails that were distributed claiming that :"In the past two days, Delara has been severely beaten in prison by both the prisoners and the prison guards. Prison authorities have confirmed that Delara's body bears severe signs of beatings and abuse. "

The same article claimed that " Amir Hussain, the young boy who was imprisoned on charges of having assisted Delara during the murder, was allowed to leave the prison on official leave. While on leave, Amir Hussain threatened to kill Delara's family and vowed to create significant "problems" for them if Delara is exonerated. "

Both Delara's sister and lawyer stated that although they occasionally receive threatening phone calls but they have no confirmation as to who makes such phone calls. According to Delara's sister the past calls were "not by Amir Hossein". It should be noted that in the event Delara is exonerated Amir Hossein may face death penalty.

Thank you for your kindness and patience.

Tell state wildlife officials to protect California condors from poisonous lead bullets

Lead ammunition is threatening to wipe out the last surviving California condors. After several public hearings, the California Fish and Game Commission is poised to vote this month on whether to ban this poisonous hunting ammunition in counties where condors live.

The California condor, North America's largest bird, is one of the most endangered animals on earth. Today there are 138 condors in the wild, 61 of which fly free in California. One of the leading causes of condor deaths is lead poisoning, which occurs when the birds accidentally ingest lead bullet fragments found in their prey. Lead poisoning has caused nine confirmed condor deaths since 1992 and has been implicated in the death or disappearance of at least 15 more condors. Other birds, such as golden and bald eagles, are also susceptible to lead contamination from ingesting lead fragments in ammunition.

The California Fish and Game Commission is considering changing its hunting regulations to ban lead ammunition in counties with condor populations. Such a ban would help protect these birds and others from lead contamination and bring them back from the brink of extinction.

The commission will vote on the ban at its April 12-13 meeting in Bodega Bay.

== What to do ==

Send a message, before April 12th, urging the California Fish and Game Commission to ban the use of lead ammunition in counties where condors live.

Subject: Ban lead ammunition in condor habitat

Dear Acting Chief Updike,

I urge the California Fish and Game Commission to ban the use of lead ammunition for hunting activities in California hunting zones where condors are found.

Leading scientists have concluded that lead poisoning is a major obstacle to the recovery of the California condor. In addition to condors, other birds, such as golden and bald eagles, also are poisoned by ingesting lead shot and lead bullet fragments.

Alternatives to lead ammunition for many hunting activities are already widely available.

Please act now to protect the natural heritage of all Californians and save the California condor.

Sincerely,

[Your name and address]
