Global Starvation Ignored by American Policy Elites

By Peter Phillips

A new report (9/2/08) from The World Bank admits that in 2005 three billion one hundred and forty million people live on less that $2.50 a day and about 44% of these people survive on less than $1.25. Complete and total wretchedness can be the only description for the circumstances faced by so many.

Lessons from America's Lost Decade

Robert Parry, Consortium News: "As the United States takes the measure of Barack Obama's first year in the White House and looks beyond to what could be a difficult new decade, it might be useful to first stop and extract some lessons from the 2000s, which proved to be a lost economic decade for many Americans."

Yemen: The Return Of Old Ghosts

By Adam Curtis

What I find so fascinating about the reporting of the War on Terror is the way almost all of it ignores history - as if it is a conflict happening outside time. The Yemen is a case in point.

The Battle for the American Soul is Over

By Joe Bageant

Some 300 million Americans fancy themselves as middle class, chiefly because they: (A) own microwaves and a car with plastic bumpers; and (B) live in perpetual hock to MasterCard and Visa. Debt, stress and insecurity being the only observable characteristics of middle class America, they rally round those things in a show of class solidarity.

A Time to Break Silence

This is a must read/listen By Rev. Martin Luther King

I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

Which Dr. King Will We Honor?

Ryan Van Lenning, Truthout: "The fact that our militarism has only grown significantly in the intervening decades makes it more comfortable to sweep these aspects of King's message under the national rug. With Obama mobilizing more soldiers and military contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan than Bush did, authorizing more drone attacks that have killed more innocent civilians than Bush did, expanding military bases in South America, and requesting and receiving the largest military budget ever in the history of not only this nation, but any nation in history, it is easier to simply close our collective lips about this King."

Liberty For All

01/24/10

A New Year brings resolutions for flatter stomachs, fatter wallets, and healthier lives. As resolutions are made with hope of improving our lives, there is little in the news that seems to indicate a wealthier new year for most people. 2009 ended with a 10% jobless rate and 20 million people collecting unemployment benefits sometime in the past year. Our current two parties in power seem to think the solution is bailouts, government interference in the market, and spending money on a national credit card...

Secret police

Reason
by Brian Doherty

Civil libertarians hoped that the Obama era would see a renewed commitment to privacy protections. But their dreams are being dashed. Congress seems likely to recess without adjusting aspects of the Patriot Act set to expire at the end of the year, which means that the existing law will be temporarily extended. Elements up for reconsideration include roving wiretaps in foreign intelligence investigations that are not targeted to a specific communication mode or person and ’section 215’ ability to seize business or other records in a presumptive terror investigation...

Providence, Rhode Island, journalist Froma Harrop is as establishmentarian as they come, and her post-Christmas-Day-terrorist-bombing-attempt column does nothing to alleviate this impression. The title? ‘To Be Safe Flying, We’d Happily Perform This Strip Tease.’ That failed attempt, you see, did not simply exhilarate those on the left and right, who see it as reason to justify further expansions of state power. In Harrop’s case, it also brings out her inner exhibitionist...

The next meltdown

Bob Wiedemer is explaining to a roomful of hedge-fund investors that the end of America as we know it won’t be as bad as they think. Wiedemer is co-author of the new book Aftershock: Protect Yourself and Profit in the Next Global Financial Meltdown. Sound overblown? That’s what they said about his first book, America’s Bubble Economy, in which Wiedemer and his co-authors, his Ph.D. brother David and writer Cindy Spitzer, predicted that the U.S. residential real-estate market was overvalued and due for a crash. That was in 2006, months before the crash actually occurred. Now Wiedemer is warning people that another bubble is about to collapse: America itself...

Saving capitalism …

The Weekly Standard
by Irwin M. Stelzer

We have met the enemy and he is us. So Pogo might have described the situation that the business community has created for itself. There is no question that the Obama administration, and even more the Democratic leadership in Congress, harbor something between skepticism and hostility towards free markets. They believe they can do a better job of allocating the nation’s resources than can millions of consumers signaling their preferences to millions of producers by setting the cash registers ringing. That’s one reason — indebtedness to trade unions is another — Obama and the Democrats bailed out a manufacturer of cars no one wanted to buy. But the wave of regulations that characterized the latter part of the Bush administration and the first year of the Obama administration has as much to do with the behavior of the business community, or at least some of its most prominent members, as with the ideological bent of our political masters... President Obama, the “war on terror,” and liberty

Intellectual Conservative
by Jack Kerwick

War is the emblem of a state emergency. There is no greater crisis that a state can suffer, no set of circumstances further removed from the ordinary, than those of war. It is true that in our violent, broken world, war, regrettably, is more often than not an indispensable means to sustaining freedom, but it is no less true that during times of war freedom is never more greatly imperiled, for it is then that the government, in the name of victory, faces none of the resistance to the measures it appropriates that it otherwise would. It is during war that government is expected to exercise its vast powers, not just toward the Enemy, but toward citizens. To put it more simply, when a state is at war, its government can coerce the citizenry far easily and to a far greater extent than it could at any other time...

Return to government by the people, for the people

Boston Globe
by Joe Kennedy

I did not get into this race for fame or money. It cuts my pay and intrudes into my private life, but I expected that. I entered because every day I see more friends out of work, struggling to support their families, and I know how to fix it. Our taxes increase, while those on entitlements live better than those working multiple jobs to support their families. This must be stopped. Like many in Massachusetts, I am fed up with government taking money and freedoms, giving us nothing in return. Everyday when you go to work to feed your family, Congress goes to work to take more from you. I will not let that continue. We, as a nation, invade and occupy foreign lands to protect ‘our interests.’ In truth, it is because of oil. Our interests should be the men and women who have completed their mission and want to come home...
