The value of an Obama promise

Obama’s swelling ego

Boston Globe
by Jeff Jacoby

11/14/09

President Obama was too busy to attend the celebrations in Germany this week marking the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. … He said nothing about the men and women who died trying to cross the wall. Nor did he mention Harry Truman or Ronald Reagan — or even Mikhail Gorbachev. He did, however, talk about Barack Obama: ‘Few would have foreseen,’ declared the president, ‘that a united Germany would be led by a woman from [the former East German state of] Brandenburg or that their American ally would be led by a man of African descent.’ … Obama couldn’t be troubled to visit Berlin to commemorate a momentous milestone in the history of human liberty. But he was glad to explain to those who were there why reflections on that milestone should inspire appreciation for the self-made ‘destiny’ of his own rise to power.”

Obama’s betrayals in the war on terror

Campaign For Liberty
by Sheldon Richman

11/14/09

After President Obama announced he would fight the release of photographs showing American soldiers abusing ‘war on terror’ detainees, Richard Haass, president of the quintessentially mainstream Council on Foreign Relations, said that Obama had learned the difference between campaigning and governing. He wasn’t being sarcastic. It was said during the presidential campaign that one of the candidates was running for George W. Bush’s third term. Did you think it was Obama?

Time to head home

Washington Post
by Eugene Robinson

11/13/09

The most dreadful burden of the presidency — the power to send men and women to die for their country — seems to weigh heavily on Barack Obama these days. He went to Dover Air Force Base to salute the coffins of fallen troops. He gave a moving speech at the memorial service for victims of last week’s killings at Fort Hood. On Veterans Day, after the traditional wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery, he took an unscheduled walk among the rows of marble headstones in Section 60, where the dead from our two ongoing wars are buried. As he decides whether to escalate the war in Afghanistan, Obama should keep these images in mind. Geopolitical calculation has human consequences. Sending more troops will mean more coffins arriving at Dover, more funerals at Arlington, more stress and hardship for military families. It would be wrong to demand such sacrifice in the absence of military goals that are clear, achievable and worthwhile...

Where are the real deficit hawks?

In These Times
by David Sirota

11/14/09

Let’s say you’re a congressperson or tea party leader looking to champion deficit reduction — a cause 38 percent of Americans tell pollsters they support. And let’s say you’re deciding whether to back two pieces of imminent legislation. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the first bill’s spending provisions cost $100 billion annually and its tax and budget-cutting provisions recoup $111 billion annually, thus reducing total federal expenditures by $11 billion each year. The second bill proposes $636 billion in annual spending and recoups nothing. Over 10 years, the first bill would spend $1 trillion and recover $1.11 trillion — a fantastic return on taxpayer investment. Meanwhile, the second bill puts us on a path to spend $6.3 trillion in the same time...

State secession: Trying to beat the world’s worst record

LewRockwell.Com
by Russell D. Longcore

11/14/09

If you can’t think of reasons that state secession is a better solution for liberty than working within ‘the system,’ consider the record of the Federal Government of the United States. Sure, you can ultimately lay the blame on all of us, since we are the ones who allow the atrocities of Washington to continue. But for now, let’s look at Washington’s record of achievement over the last 150 years...

What is totalitarianism?

Strike the Root
by Michael Kleen

11/12/09

If the United States came under the control of a totalitarian regime, would we recognize it? This question is of utmost importance today, when many of us harbor fears that some time in the near future ideas such as freedom, liberty, and privacy will be alien to our society. But as we witness the regular passage of legislation designed to restrict and regulate, and the tendency of the Federal government to increase rather than decrease its power (with a handful of exceptions), we are struck by the uninterrupted routine of life in the USA. As the central government brings more and more of private society under its control, we continue to watch cable TV, shop at supermarkets overflowing with products, and eat at our favorite restaurants. Could it be that we have already passed that dreaded threshold and missed it?

What’s wrong with patriotism?

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

And certainly do not attempt to create the false doctrine that it is some how unpatriotic to oppose such despicable actions just because they are perpetrated by the government of one’s own homeland. And don’t you dare tell me that I must follow any president blindly in order to prove my patriotism. I am a free-thinking, independent patriot BECAUSE I stand in opposition to a government corrupted thoroughly by a flawed foreign policy...

Afghanistan: New prison at Bagram points to shift in approach

ABC News

11/15/09

The U.S. military is starting over in Afghanistan. ‘It’s a new world — a new war,’ one senior officer told ABC News, yelling over the sound of jet engines and helicopter rotors. There’s no better example than the prison at Bagram, once a secret facility that housed the most hard-core al Qaeda fighters. Over the past eight years, a veil of mystery nurtured its reputation. It grew from a stifling series of steel shipping containers to a place of sophisticated torture...

The trial of the century and the long shadow of 9/11

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

11/16/09

The upcoming trial in New York of KSM and his confreres promises to be a media circus unparalleled in the history of this nation: think of the Lindbergh kidnapping case and the O. J. Simpson trial, and then imagine if Lee Harvey Oswald had lived to be tried — and then multiply that by 10. This promises to be more than a show trial; it is going to be high drama in the courtroom, not a stylized Kabuki theater ritual, in which control of the narrative will be fiercely fought over as both sides try to dominate the proceedings and imprint their own ’spin’ on the drama as it unfolds. What fascinates me, however, is not the prospect of the trial itself, but the reasons behind the Bush administration’s refusal to get this over with as soon as they got their hands on the defendants...

US monetary policy to blame for asset bubbles

Wall Street Journal

11/16/09

China’s top banking regulator issued a sharp critique of U.S. financial management only hours before President Barack Obama commenced his first visit to the Asian giant, highlighting economic and trade tensions that threaten to overshadow the trip. Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, said that a weak U.S. dollar and low U.S. interest rates had led to ‘massive speculation’ that was inflating asset bubbles around the world. It has created ‘unavoidable risks for the recovery of the global economy, especially emerging economies,’ Mr. Liu said. … His comments signaled that Mr. Obama — on the third leg of a four-country Asian tour — can expect blunt talk from Chinese leaders on the economy...

The dollar dips

The Weekly Standard
by Irwin M. Stelzer

11/14/09

It seems that investors, or at least many of them, have decided that the Obama administration and the Bernanke Fed are combining to depreciate the dollar, the former willingly to encourage exports and create jobs, the latter warily. Talk of the devaluing of other nations’ paper currencies at one time produced a flight to the dollar, deemed safe from the depredations of rulers trying to shore up their struggling economies by printing money. But times have changed. There is now so little faith in the value of the dollar, which has dropped to about a 15-month low against a basket of currencies, that investors are fleeing to Brazilian reals and Russian rubles — or so it seems. Of course, with interest rates in America close to zero, some investors are borrowing dollars at virtually no cost, and using them to buy assets in nations in which interest rates are high enough to make such a trade profitable. The influx of these funds drives up the value of assets in other countries, creating the danger of ‘bubbles,’ which might burst if this footloose, ‘hot money’ is suddenly withdrawn. Which has the recipient countries more than a little nervous, and Brazil has adopted a tax to discourage an inflow of dollars...

FAA and NORAD Changed Records to Accord with Cheney Lies

Mr. President: Turn Away From War

Open Letter From the Peace Movement to President Obama on His Upcoming Decision Regarding the Afghan War

Twenty Years From Now, You Will Lie To Your Children

By David Michael Green

There is an era of bad feeling in America, long in the making, but hardly at its nadir. The United States has been on a southward glide path for three decades now, an act of political physics as natural and inevitable as gravity itself, but also deeply exacerbated by the predatory political movement pioneered by Reagan and Thatcher, and continued by Bushes, Blairs, Clintons and Obamas alike.

Finance's Five Fatal Flaws

By William K. Black

The financial sector is a tool to help those that make real tools, not an end in itself. But five fatal flaws in the financial sector's current structure have created a monster that drains the real economy, promotes fraud and corruption, threatens democracy, and causes recurrent, intensifying crises.

Gates Invokes New Authority to Block Release of Detainee Abuse Photos
