The nation’s founders would roll over in their graves at what patriotism has become. After their bad experience with British colonial military abuses and seeing European citizens paying with blood and treasure for the frequent wars of their monarchs, the founders feared standing armies for undermining liberty. The U.S. Constitution rejected European militarism in favor of tight congressional controls over the employment, organization, and funding of the U.S. armed forces. Since World War II, those controls — such as congressional declarations of war — have been severely eroded. And the American public, still feeling guilty over the admittedly terrible treatment of returning draftees from the Vietnam War, has retained its awe of the now voluntary military as an institution, even as it has soured on the Iraq and Afghan Wars. Even while fighting two unpopular wars, the public has supported huge defense budgets all out of proportion to what is needed to defend the country. Is this healthy for a republic?

Nick Turse, Tomdispatch.com: "When the Nobel Committee awarded its annual Peace Prize to President Barack Obama, it afforded him a golden opportunity seldom offered to American war presidents: the possibility of success. Should he decide to go the peace-maker route, Obama stands a chance of really accomplishing something significant. On the other hand, history suggests that the path of war is a surefire loser. As president after president has discovered, especially since World War II, the US military simply can't seal the deal on winning a war."

Excellent journalism was never a priority of Joseph Pulitzer’s, and the prizes reflect it. So does the mainstream press which is yellower than ever in both the conventional journalistic sense and the colloquial sense of cowardly. Even worse, however, are the Nobels. They are almost always given to those committed to Western civilization and Capitalism. So now Obama has gotten the prize. Why was it awarded to him? Because he is a protector of the economic status quo and a hegemonist — a true child of a decadent civilization. The deadly arms manufacturer would be highly pleased...
