The Man Who Crashed the World

Michael Lewis, Vanity Fair: "Almost a year after A.I.G.'s collapse, despite a tidal wave of outrage, there still has been no clear explanation of what toppled the insurance giant. The author decides to ask the people involved - the silent, shell-shocked traders of the A.I.G. Financial Products unit - and finds that the story may have a villain, whose reign of terror over 400 employees brought the company, the US economy, and the global financial system to their knees."

Is Texas harboring the torture decider?

Freedom's Phoenix
by Ray McGovern

07/07/09

Seldom does a crime scene have so clear a smoking gun. A two-page presidential memorandum of Feb. 7, 2002, leaves no room for uncertainty regarding the ‘decider’ on torture. His broad-stroke signature made torture official policy. This should come as no surprise. You see, the Feb. 7, 2002, memorandum has been posted on the Web since June 22, 2004, when then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales mistakenly released it, along with other White House memoranda. The title seemed innocent enough — ‘Humane Treatment of al Qaeda and Taliban Detainees’ — but in the body of the memo President George W. Bush authorized his senior aides to withhold Geneva Convention protections from suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban detainees. Like Shakespeare, the media seem harshest on the lawyers, including Texans Gonzales and William J. Haynes II (Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s lawyer), who later outdid themselves trying to make torture legal. What gets lost in the woodwork is this: Banal as their ex-post-facto ‘justification’ for torture was, the lawyers were not the deciders...

Detainees, Even if Acquitted, Might Not Go Free

Wall Street Journal

07/07/09

The Obama administration said Tuesday it may continue to imprison non-U.S. citizens indefinitely even if they have been acquitted of terrorism charges by a U.S. military commission. Jeh Johnson, the Defense Department’s chief lawyer, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that releasing a detainee who has been tried and found not guilty was a policy decision officials would make based on their estimate of whether the prisoner posed a future threat. The Bush administration took the same position, but its legality was never tested. Also at the hearing, Obama administration officials differed with the Navy’s senior uniformed lawyer over whether coerced statements could be used to obtain convictions before military commissions...

The Obama justice system

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

07/08/09

In June, Robert Gibbs was repeatedly asked by ABC News‘ Jake Tapper whether accused Terrorists who were given a trial and were acquitted would be released as a result of the acquittal, but Gibbs — amazingly — refused to make that commitment. But this is the first time an Obama official has affirmatively stated that they have the ‘post-acquittal detention’ power (and, to my knowledge, the Bush administration never claimed the power to detain someone even if they were acquitted). All of this underscores what has clearly emerged as the core ‘principle’ of Obama justice when it comes to accused Terrorists — namely, ‘due process’ is pure window dressing with only one goal: to ensure that anyone the President wants to keep imprisoned will remain in prison. They’ll create various procedures to prettify the process, but the outcome is always the same — ongoing detention for as long as the President dictates...

MP claims UK “outsourced torture”

BBC News [UK]

07/08/09

An MP has used parliamentary privilege to accuse the British intelligence service of ‘outsourcing torture.’ Former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis cited the case of Rangzieb Ahmed, from Rochdale, who was jailed for life for being an al-Qaeda planner. Mr Davis told the House of Commons that intelligence services had allowed Ahmed to go to Pakistan. Once there, they alerted Pakistani authorities who arrested him and tortured him, parliament was told. Mr Davis is calling for a judicial inquiry into at least 15 cases where torture of terrorist suspects has been alleged...

Revealed: The Secret Torture Evidence MI5 Tried to Suppress

Ian Cobain, The Guardian UK: "The true depth of British involvement in the torture of terrorism suspects overseas and the manner in which that complicity is concealed behind a cloak of courtroom secrecy was laid bare last night when David Davis MP detailed the way in which one counter-terrorism operation led directly to a man suffering brutal mistreatment."

Revealing the Real US Africa-Policy

It's time for some straight talk on U.S. foreign policy as it relates to Africa. While Obama administration officials and African Military Command (AFRICOM) representatives insist that U.S. foreign policy towards Africa isn't being militarized, the evidence seems to suggest otherwise.
