Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Dick Cheney and his lawyer, David Addington, pressured the Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2005 to quickly approve a torture memo that authorized CIA interrogators to use a combination of barbaric techniques during interrogations of 'high-value' detainees, despite objections from senior DOJ officials, according to emails written by James Comey, the agency's former deputy attorney general. In the emails, Comey also wrote that then Attorney General (AG) Alberto Gonzales was 'weak' and had essentially allowed Cheney and Addington to politicize the DOJ."

By the time the U.S. government unveiled its Public Private Investment Partnership in March, the toxic loans and securities clogging bank balance sheets had become ‘legacy assets.’ What if deficit hawks took the same tack and marketed the $787 billion fiscal stimulus as ‘legacy debt?’ ‘The $787 billion the U.S. Treasury will be borrowing or confiscating from you via taxation will saddle future generations with a legacy of debt,’ the press release might read. ‘Your children and grandchildren can look forward to higher taxes, a lower standard of living and minimal government support in their old age.’ Maybe the public would balk. And maybe some member of Congress would be bold enough to sponsor a measure to call off the still-uncommitted expenditures...

So America’s national anthem began as a gleeful tirade against the Mahommedans. And of course every member of the U.S. Marine Corps regularly bellows out the USMC anthem, beginning ‘From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.’ In short, America’s march to Empire was minted in the crucible of anti-Islamic sentiment...

Before an American secretary of state gets up on her hind legs and lectures the rest of the world about ‘the darker events of its past,’ complaining about the lack of ‘a public accounting of those killed, detained, or missing,’ let’s look at the record: in 1993, then-attorney general Janet Reno ordered the murder of 76 people in Waco, Texas, on grounds that didn’t sound all that credible at the time, and, in retrospect, turn out to have been entirely dubious and self-serving. Can it really be that the U.S. government — yes, the same people who ordered this and this — is hectoring China for unlawful detention? As a great philosopher once said, oh, puh-leeeeeeeze!
