No Dirty Gold campaign’s call for responsible gold mining

More than 6,000 of you took action on August 23 and told Target to support the No Dirty Gold campaign’s call for responsible gold mining. Thank you for taking action.

Target acknowledged it received your faxes. We are hopeful that Target will soon add its name to the growing list of retailers that have endorsed No Dirty Gold’s goals.

But there's more you can do. You can write a letter to your local newspaper letting its readers know they have the power to change the way gold mining is done. And if you're one of the first 100 activists who notify us that your letter was printed, you will receive a No Dirty Gold t-shirt.
https://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_lte

The editorial section is one of the most-read parts of your newspaper and it offers an opportunity to build awareness in your community about the impacts of gold mining.

We have provided suggested language for your letter. Please adapt it to suit your community and your background. If there is a Target store within the circulation area of your paper, use your letter to urge Target to sign the Golden Rules.

It is usually helpful to relate your letter to topics the newspaper has covered recently. Newspapers generally limit letters to the editor to between 100 and 200 words.

To the editor,

I was shocked to learn the production of a single gold wedding ring generates 20 tons of mine waste on average. This waste contains toxic materials, which often pollute nearby water sources and compromise the environment of local communities that may have had no say in the opening of the mine.

About 80 percent of newly mined gold is used in jewelry. Some jewelers understand this and are calling on the mining industry to clean up its act. These jewelers have endorsed the No Dirty Gold campaign’s criteria for responsible gold production called the Golden Rules.

Many jewelers have not expressed their support for responsible gold production. The next time I visit a jeweler, I will ask if they have endorsed the No Dirty Gold campaign’s Golden Rules. I urge other consumers in this community to do the same.

Alternative text for Target localities: Many retailers, such as Target, have not yet expressed their support for responsible gold production. The next time I’m at a Target, I will ask them to endorse the No Dirty Gold campaign’s Golden Rules. I urge other consumers in this community to do the same.

Sincerely, [Make sure you include your name, address, and telephone number in your letter. Some newspapers verify authorship before printing letters.]

Check your newspaper's letter to the editor requirements in its editorial page or on its Web site. After submitting the letter, please send us a copy and monitor the paper to see if your letter is printed.

Fall is a time of new opportunities and responsibilities for students returning to school. The same is true for the class rings vendor Jostens.

Tell Jostens to support responsibly mined gold.
https://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens

In February 2006, the No Dirty Gold campaign https://act.oxfamamerica.org/ct/07AwXnF1RRFN/ named Jostens one of the eight jewelry retailers lagging behind other retailers in its support for responsible gold production. As students return to campus and Jostens begins its biggest sales season, the company has another chance to show its commitment to the environment and human rights.

Tell Jostens https://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens that the pride class rings signify is undermined by the environmental and human rights costs of irresponsible gold mining. Remind them that it is their responsibility to show it respects the values of the institutions its class rings represent.

As you know, Oxfam America works to end poverty, hunger, and injustice. Tell Jostens https://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens to do its part by endorsing the No Dirty Gold campaign's Golden Rules.

Sincerely,

Tim Fullerton

Schreiben Sie direkt an Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel.

The chemical ocean

By ROBYN STUBBS, 24 HOURS

https://vancouver.24hrs.ca/News/2006/09/06/1806242-sun.html

Once boasting an abundant and healthy marine eco-system, B.C.'s west coast marine life is now fighting for survival against an endless stream of chemicals, toxins and waste.

In fact, if a killer whale washed up dead on B.C.'s shores today, the carcass would likely be considered hazardous waste due to the high levels of contaminants stored in its blubber, says David Lane, executive director of the T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation.

"We do know there are a host of harmful chemicals that kill fish and have long-term health impacts, and those chemicals are in our sewage, in our landfills and each and every input into our rivers and oceans," says Lane.

Apart from causing immediate death and cancerous growths, toxins in certain brands of everyday cleaning products and laundry detergents, as well as excreted pharmaceutical drugs, have serious and potentially deadly effects on the reproductive, immune and hormonal systems of marine life.

"People used to say the solution to pollution is dilution, that if you dilute it enough, it would go away," said Robie MacDonald, research scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

"That is true for some things ... but the trouble with the contaminants that we've invented over the last 50 years, such as PBDEs, PCBs and POPs, is that they tend to be fat soluble, and they enter in at the bottom of the food web and make their way up."

And, even though PCBs, a particularly persistent organic pollutant, were banned in Canada in the 1970s, they're still showing up in high levels in whales and other marine predators. It will take decades to flush them out of the marine eco-system, and even longer for pollutants that are still entering the ocean, MacDonald says.

The T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation, along with the Georgia Strait Alliance, the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union, and private investigator Doug Chapman, are currently represented by the Sierra Legal Defence Fund in a private charge against the GVRD and the provincial government for poor sewage treatment practices at the Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant in West Vancouver.

The charge alleges the primary treatment plant dumped toxic sewage into Burrard Inlet on at least seven separate days in the last two years, and that the province has been negligent in its responsibility to uphold protective measures of the Fisheries Act.

"The province, the federal government and the GVRD are aware they have been contravening the Fisheries Act, and nothing's been done," says Christianne Wilhelmson, program co-ordinator at the Georgia Strait Alliance, who argues all sewage plants in the GVRD should have at least secondary treatment to remove not just larger objects, but chemical toxins as well.

"For some reason in British Columbia, we've got a very backward idea about sewage treatment ... If people would just look at the new technologies that are being used in Sweden and Australia and other parts of the world, we can actually turn our waste into a resource, rather than using our ocean as a dumping ground."

Tomorrow, 24 hours takes an in-depth look at the status of a worrisome set of chemicals, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and how the federal government stacks up when it comes to protecting the public.

YOU SHOULD KNOW

- The GVRD operates five wastewater treatment plants in Greater Vancouver: Annacis Island, Lulu Island and North West Langley, which provide secondary sewage treatment and lona and Lions Gate which are primary treatment facilities.

- Primary treatment, also known as mechanical treatment, filters out oils, grit, sand and solids while secondary treatment removes up to 90 per cent of toxins, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants.

- Stockholm, Sweden, has been turning sewage sludge into biogas to fuel cars for more than a decade, and according to the European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST), the renewable fuel doesn't contribute to the CO2 content in the atmosphere.

Do you have trees in your yard? Protect the soil!

Ask a nursery for care tips or google your tree. Find out how to care for it. Redwoods like Iron, Acid, Mineral Soil, Nitrogen and Water! Iron: carot compost, iron scrap metal, rusty nails, bolts etc. But not toxic galvanized nails. Acid: coffee grounds or some fancy water filters make acid water and alkali water. Drink the alkali water and pour the acid water on your Redwoods, Doug Firs, Rhodedendrons, Hydrangeas, etc. google acid loving plants. Mineral Soil: sand, chalky sand bags, crushed rock, etc. sprinkle all around. Nitrogen: compost, manure, poo, etc. Water: there is no such thing as too much water for a Redwood, so long as the soil can breathe. On top of the compost you lay around the tree, apply a thick cover of mulch, or wood chips. Wood chips can be dumped in your driveway for free anytime you see one of those chipper shredder trucks. (Saves them a trip to the dump!) Just be sure they did not remove the tree because of bugs. Ask them! Look at the wood they cut. Be sure there are no pinholes in the bark from boring beetles, termites, etc. Wood chips can be piled as high as you like. But NOT near the tree trunk of some trees. Beware fungus, etc. If you pile woodchips high enough, catching all the winter rain, you do not have to water in the summer. Sound like a good idea? this is how forests do it, and forests don't use pipes, artificial irrigation, or pay a water bill. Forests are smart! Wood chips keep the sun from drying the soil. Wood chips catch and hold rainwater, slowly releasing it to the roots. Wood chips eventually break down / decompose, becoming soil! Wood chips are fun!

Oak trees do NOT like acid. Do not water the base of an Oak. Do not cover the base of an Oak. Native Americans would apply volcanic ash to Oak trunks and soil. You too can apply minerals / whitewash your trees! All trees like minerals. https://suddenoaklife.org explains how! Dr Lee Klinger of Santa Cruz whitewashes trees with https://azomite.com Azomite (60 minerals) to which he adds Calcium, Bentonite, and Lime. Mineals absorbed by bark and root strenghthen the tree, boosting tree immunity. Opportunists such as phytophthora ramorum (Sudden Oak Death fungus), bugs, etc. rely on weak trees.

Do not park or drive cars under the drip line of a tree. The drip line of a tree is the shadow the tree casts if the sun is directly overhead. The drip line of a tree is the cirlce in which water drops would fall from the tips of the longest branches. The drip line of a tree maps closely to the root line of a tree. Protect this soil: do not allow trucks or heavy equipment to compact this precious earth. Do not pave, build, trench or cut into the soil beneath a tree. (It might fall over if you kill roots.)

Please distribute widely!

Arborsculpture highlighted in new book Sentinel staff report - July 14, 2005 Author Richard Reames is a man on a mission: to help people develop a better appreciation for nature, and to provide insight into the use of trees as more than just oxygen providers growing on the planet. A commissioned arborsculptor, Reames is the author of the recently released "Arborsculpture: Solutions for a Small Planet" published by Arborsmith Studios of Williams, Ore. Arborsculpture is the practice of shaping live tree trunks into works of art of construction. Live trees can be shaped into useful, everyday items like chairs, gazebos and tool handles, as well as sculptures such as spirals, boxes and peace signs. Economy grows, environment suffers

Humans are consuming too much and doing too little to protect the environment.

https://pubs.acs.org/subscribe/journals/esthag-w/2006/aug/business/pt_economy.html

The Worldwatch Institute has concluded that the economy is flourishing at an unsustainable pace. In the past year, according to Vital Signs, the organization’s annual review of future trends, humans produced more steel and aluminum than ever before in history.

[url for report] https://www.worldwatch.org/node/4344

Automakers put a record 45.6 million vehicles on the market, and retailers sold >816 million cell phones.

Manufacturing these goods requires the exploitation of a large amount of natural resources, as well as the additional environmental expense of burning fossil fuels. The institute states that the average concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere rose 0.6% in 2005, the largest recorded annual increase of the greenhouse gas. Meanwhile, the planet’s average temperature rose to 14.6 °C. NASA scientists report that global surface temperatures in 2005 were the hottest ever recorded in more than a century of instrumental data.

Current consumption patterns can only sustain a global population of 1.8 billion, the report’s author said in a prepared statement. The planet now has 6.5 billion people, and that number is expected to grow. “Business as usual is harming the Earth’s ecosystems and the people who depend on them,” he said.

The report includes various web resources that can be accessed for further information.

Cascades' Reddened Forests Signal Threat to Humans

Forests in the West are dying. Pat Rasmussen says, "As I look around, I see humans continuing life as usual, seemingly unaware that the planetary forests that make life possible are more and more stressed, pushed toward death, by our actions. We stand at the edge of a catastrophic precipice, where life as we know it may no longer be possible."
