Some analysts say that President-elect Barack Obama may not be ready to set formal emissions targets for 2020 within a year, and that economic recession could delay an end-2009 deadline by 190 nations for agreement on a new UN global warming pact. 'We have to have numbers on the table from industrialized countries (by the end of 2009) otherwise the other dominoes won't fall,' Yvo de Boer, head of the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat said during December 1-12 talks on global warming."

Collapsing antarctic ice sheets, which have become potent symbols of global warming, may actually turn out to help in the battle against climate change and soaring carbon emissions. Professor Rob Raiswell, a geologist at the University of Leeds, says that as the sheets break off the ice covering the continent, floating icebergs are produced that gouge minerals from the bedrock as they make their way to the sea. Raiswell believes that the accumulated frozen mud could breathe life into the icy waters around Antarctica, triggering a large, natural removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And as rising temperatures cause the ice sheets to break up faster, creating more icebergs, the amount of carbon dioxide removed will also rise. Raiswell says: ‘It won’t solve the problem, but it might buy us some time’...

Some 11,000 climate delegates are meeting in Poland's western city of Poznan, seeking agreement upon new post-Kyoto climate goals, to be finalized in Copenhagen by the end of next year. Simultaneously, the European Union summit is attempting to reach consensus upon the so-called '20-20-20' proposals, which by 2020 seek a 20 percent cut in greenhouse gas (higher if others agree), a 20 percent cut in energy consumed and 20 percent use of renewable energy. Sadly, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk are actively seeking to weaken these modest and realistic medium- term goals, which can be built upon, on narrow economic self- interests. Without a deal at the Brussels summit, the European Union is unlikely to reach consensus prior to the Copenhagen conference. Italy and Poland must be called upon to end their parochial climate change obstructionism -- putting the interests of global citizenry and an operable biosphere, above continued cheap coal based electricity that is killing us all.
