Food Price Rises Threaten Global Security

David Adam, writing for The Guardian UK, reports, "Rising food prices could spark worldwide unrest and threaten political stability, the UN's top humanitarian official warned yesterday after two days of rioting in Egypt over the doubling of prices of basic foods in a year and protests in other parts of the world." And, TIME's Kathie Klarreich reports: "Haitians are no strangers to hunger. But even the resilience of the hemisphere's poorest citizens can be pushed too far, and with world food prices spiking this year due to shrinking harvests, burgeoning demand and skyrocketing fuel prices, it should be little surprise that Haiti is once again erupting in angry violence."

Food and South Asia's Future

J. Sri Raman writes for Truthout: "The way to the political future of three major South Asian countries now lies through the stomachs of their poor millions. Escalating food prices may have far-reaching consequences for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, each of which is currently passing through a crucial political phase."

Grains Gone Wild

Paul Krugman writes for The New York Times: "These days you hear a lot about the world financial crisis. But there's another world crisis under way - and it's hurting a lot more people. I'm talking about the food crisis. Over the past few years the prices of wheat, corn, rice and other basic foodstuffs have doubled or tripled, with much of the increase taking place just in the last few months."

Siehe dazu:
