Global Hunger, Corporate Greed: When will enough be enough?

By Debnath Guharoy

Systemic deception has become acceptable culture in too many boardrooms, with nothing more than a wink and a nod required down the chain of command. When it gets to a point that an accountant is unable to explain complex new financial instruments and their equally befuddling acronyms, disaster cannot be far away.

Credit Crunch? The Real Crisis is Global Hunger

A food recession is under way. Biofuels are a crime against humanity, but - take it from a flesh eater - flesh eating is worse.

Hunger Hypocrites

Le Monde's editorialist points out "those who are the most generous today [in alleviating poor countries' hunger] are those perhaps the most responsible for this planetary malfunction."

Biofuel: The Burning Question

Cahal Milmo of The Independent UK says, "A formidable coalition of campaigners is warning that, far from helping to reverse climate change, the UK's biofuel revolution will speed up global warming and the loss of vital habitat worldwide."

Cheap fossil fuel has made us what we are. Which is to say: rich, powerful-Look at us! We can make the ice caps melt! The oceans rise! But something else too: cheap fossil fuel has made us the first people on Earth with no need of our neighbors. Think, in the course of an ordinary day, how often you rely on the people who live near you for anything of practical value. Perhaps carpooling your kids to school or soccer. If you live in a rural community, there may be a volunteer fire department, which keeps your insurance affordable. But your food, your fuel, your shelter, your clothes, and your entertainment most likely come from a distance and arrive anonymously at that. A meteorite could fall on your cul-de-sac tomorrow, disappearing your neighbors, and the routines of your daily life wouldn’t change...

Why Food Costs Are Climbing

The Globe and Mail's Eric Reguly says, "For the first time in decades, the specter of widespread hunger for millions looms as food prices explode. Two words not in common currency in recent years - famine and starvation - are now being raised as distinct possibilities in the poorest, food-importing countries."

Rising Food Prices Spark Deadly Unrest

According to the Agence France-Presse, "The World Bank meets here Sunday as rising food prices spark deadly unrest in developing countries, underscoring the urgency of getting food aid to desperate people." In a related story, Joseph Guyler Delva and Jim Loney of Reuters report: "Haiti's government fell on Saturday when senators fired the prime minister after more than a week of riots over food prices."

UN Report: Change in Farming Can Feed World

John Vidal reports for The Guardian UK, "Sixty countries backed by the World Bank and most UN bodies yesterday called for radical changes in world farming to avert increasing regional food shortages, escalating prices and growing environmental problems.... The authors of the 2,500-page International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development [IAASTD] say the world produces enough food for everyone, yet more than 800 million people go hungry."
