Myth of Tal Afar, beacon of American 'success'

Pity the city that becomes a symbol of US success in Iraq. Last year,Tal Afar in the north-east of the country was being lauded in Washington as the one place where the US had brought peace. Perhaps the same prescription might work elsewhere in Iraq.

US Is Extending Tours of Army in Battle Zones

The military announced Wednesday that most active duty Army units now in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as those sent in the future, would serve 15-month tours, three months longer than the standard one-year tour. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement, "Extending the tours of all active duty Army personnel is an unacceptable price for our troops and their families to pay."

THE PREMIERE OF BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, "BUYING THE WAR"

https://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonamerica/index.html

The premiere of BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, "Buying the War," explores the role of the press in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, including how the government's claims about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein were largely accepted at face value by the mainstream media and cheer-leaded by the "partisan press." The marketing of the war has been much examined, but BILL MOYERS JOURNAL looks at how key elements of the media bought into the propaganda. "Buying the War" features interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim Russert of "Meet the Press"; Bob Simon of "60 Minutes"; Walter Pincus of the Washington Post; Walter Isaacson, then president of CNN; editor at large of The New Republic and author Peter Beinart; talk show host Phil Donahue; and James Wolcott, Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel of Knight Ridder, which was acquired by the McClatchy Company in 2006. Virtually alone, Knight Ridder asked for the hard evidence to back up the president's justification of the war.

"We're sending young men and women, and nowadays not so young men and women, to risk their lives. And everyone wants to be behind them. And everyone should be behind them," says James Walcott, Washington bureau chief of Knight Ridder. "The question for us in journalism is, are we really behind them when we fail to do our jobs?"

Iraqis Finally Unite, Against the US

Robert Scheer writes: "You have to hand it to Senator Joe Lieberman for having the chutzpah to cite the fiercely anti-American rally that dominated the anniversary of Iraq's fourth year of US occupation as evidence that the troop 'surge' is working. After a weekend in which ten US soldiers were killed - four more were killed on Monday, bringing the total to 45 already in April - and the citizens of once bustling Baghdad cowered in their homes under a US-imposed round-the-clock curfew, President Bush had the good sense for once to say not a word about the glorious 'liberation' of Iraq."

"Surging" Toward Failure in Iraq

Robert Parry writes: "The underlying military reality is that the United States has long since 'lost' the war in Iraq. As many military and intelligence analysts recognize, it is not winnable in any normal sense of the word. The 'surge' of sending tens of thousands more US troops into Iraq only guarantees that the final body count will be higher and the piles of IOUs bigger."

Iraq's Wounded: On Their Own

Nearly 37,000 Iraqis were injured last year alone. Though programs exist to help them, many find hope only when they take matters into their own hands.
