US "Planning to Keep 50,000 Troops in Iraq for Many Years"

America plans to retain a garrison of 50,000 troops, one tenth of its entire army, in Iraq for years to come, according to US media reports.

Ramadi: Fallujah Redux

"Fearful residents are now pouring out of Ramadi after the US military has been assaulting the city for months with tactics like cutting water, electricity and medical aid, imposing curfews, and attacking by means of snipers and random air strikes. This time, Iraqis there are right to fear the worst - an all out attack on the city, similar to what was done to nearby Fallujah, " writes Dahr Jamail.

Now for the bad news

The Weekly Standard
by Reuel Marc Gerecht

It may well be that the manner of Zarqawi's death will send the wrong signal to the U.S. military, which seems determined to continue its 'intelligence-driven" counterinsurgency. Good intelligence was followed by laser-guided munitions -- just the kind of action that warms Secretary Rumsfeld's heart. But neither we nor the Iraqis are going to find salvation through good intelligence and smart bombs. If we continue on this 'easy' path, we will only guarantee that Abu Musab al Zarqawi's name will endure... (for publication 06/19/06)

With Zarqawi's death, U.S. should exit Iraq

Fox News
by Ted Galen Carpenter

06/10/06

The air strikes that killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on June 7 should cause rejoicing in both Iraq and the United States. An especially evil, brutal, bloodthirsty terrorist is gone, and Al Qaeda has suffered a significant blow. That being said, Americans should not assume his death will make a major difference in Iraq’s overall security environment. The episode is simply the latest milestone that is not really a milestone in that unhappy country. We should be especially skeptical of those who proclaim every favorable development as a crucial turning point in the Iraq conflict. We’ve heard it all before. ... The reality is that the level of violence in Iraq has increased rather than declined since those premature claims of victory. ... Both the Bush administration and the American people need to recognize just how bad the sectarian violence in Iraq has become...

Iraq: Al Anbar troops leave army in droves

Stars & Stripes

06/11/06

Iraqi soldiers in Al Anbar province are leaving their army in droves, draining much-needed manpower from fledgling Iraqi security forces and preventing U.S. troops from reducing troop strength in the volatile region, U.S. and Iraqi military officials say. Lousy living conditions, bad food and failure to receive regular pay are the main reasons behind the exodus, which is running at least several hundred soldiers a month, the officials say...

Militant mothers take on Tony Blair

Independent [UK]

06/11/06

Families of British soldiers killed in Iraq have reacted furiously to a letter from Tony Blair saying that their loved ones died defending their country, since, they say, the Iraqi regime never posed a threat. The anger has strengthened the resolve of mothers and wives who yesterday launched their campaign to bring British troops back home from the Gulf. They also called for a nation-wide picket of Army recruiting offices...

Hundreds of Iraqi soldiers deserting

Erratic pay, inadequate food and poor living conditions are driving several hundred Iraqi soldiers out of the army every month.

From Information Clearing House

So is Iraq free now?

Contrary to erroneous reports promoted by the US government, Zarqawi’s so-called ‘Al Qaeda in Iraq’ was not really a part of Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda movement, and he was not the leader of the anti-US resistance in Iraq.
